Post Big eInk device for uni

Hi guys

I only just stumbled across this forum, but I'm not new to eReaders. I have owned the original nook and now use a nook simple touch, both of which I have loved and use regularly.

However, PDF support is a disaster and illegible on 6". I'd like a device with a big screen for viewing handouts, scripts and textbooks in class.

The Onyx BOOX M92 looks nice and the addition of a pen seems like an awesome idea.. But, I have used a windows tablet PC equipped with an active digitizer and OneNote to take notes in the past, this works very well! The iPad with those flimsy finger-imitating styluses does not compare!

A few questions:
  • How well does the M92 handle pen input?
  • Does it make sense to buy this device now (Nov 13) or should I wait for the next gen?
  • Does this device make sense in class, where one might switch between files regularly? (Is it fast enough, is what I'm really asking? )
  • How well does it perform with all the recent updates? (The reviews I've seen are older. Have there been any notable improvements?)
  • Is the Icarus different in any way (besides rebranding)?

Are there any other devices you could recommend? How about Pocketbook?
I'm not interested in audio playback or games, though eInk is a must.

Price isn't an issue, since this would massively reduce my printing costs.. uhm, well, to 0.-

I have seen some of the other posts, but none of them answer these specific questions.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Regards fd

Although I do most of my reading on a 6" e-ink reader, I recently bought a Nook HD+ to read PDF's, magazines and graphic novels. The 9" HD screen is fantastic for reading all of these. I realize you've stated that e-ink is a must and, other things being equal, I would have preferred a large screen e-ink reader as well but other things AREN'T equal. For me, the trade-offs were worth it. All the PDF reading apps work great on it. Mostly, I use ezPDF and Adobe Reader. I also use the Kindle for Android app and the Moon+ reader. I don't use any of the B&N reading apps and don't buy any content from them.

  • How well does the M92 handle pen input?
Well, but sometimes the pen stop to "write". You take away the pen from the screen an instant and the problem is solved.
  • Does it make sense to buy this device now (Nov 13) or should I wait for the next gen?
If you have the time, you can wait. If you doesn't like the new models, you could by at a reduce price the old models.
  • Does this device make sense in class, where one might switch between files regularly? (Is it fast enough, is what I'm really asking? )
The e-ink devices are, in general, are not fast. There is an update to have the multitasking feature : you could have 4 files opens and switch rapidly between them. But, open a file is not 'fast'.
  • How well does it perform with all the recent updates? (The reviews I've seen are older. Have there been any notable improvements?)
For some month, there is no update. The M92 is fully usable with the firmware and I like it. We hope that after the release of the new models Onyx don't forget the old one.
There is an interesting project to make an alternative firmware : Obuntu (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=217438), thanks to Seaniko7 for this. Seaniko7 assess the possibility to use the work done for OpenInkpot too.
  • Is the Icarus different in any way (besides rebranding)?
Icarus is like the standard device (http://http://ereader-store.de/en/5-e-book-readers). Be careful, some devices (Poland) are locked and the firmwares in this forum aren't usable.
