Epub Validation Errors
I'm new to ePub validation. I uploaded my boss' eBook to Smashwords and it was declined to get in the premium catalog. I ran the ePub Validator and got the errors. They look like a foreign language to me. Can someone please help me? Example of the errors.... value of attribute "lang" is invalid;must be an RFC 3066 language identifier, element "img" missing required attribute "alt", assertion failed: identical playOrder values for nabPoint/navTarget?pageTarget?pageTarget that do not refer to same target, '5':fragment identifier is not defined in 'index_split_000.html'

A few questions:
  • What is the format you are submitting to Smashwords? (.doc, .epub, ...)
    • If you are submitting a .doc, have you read Smashwords's Style Guidelines?
  • What program are you using to create this format? (Microsoft Word, Sigil, InDesign, ...)
  • Do you know HTML and/or CSS?
  • What exactly is giving you these errors? (Smashwords?)
    • Could you please give the entire list of errors?

These problems cannot be fixed without a knowledge of HTML at least. I suggest you use Atlantis Word processor to create your word file to ePub. It will not have these problems in the first place and your lack of knowledge will not be an issue.

It is just another victim of the Meatgrinder. Using Atlantis will not help here, if the upload is a Word document.

You haven't answered the other question of Tex. Is the document formatted according to the Smashwords Styledoc?

Indeed. Here is a link to the Smashwords Style Guide:

Most of these errors are understandable (if you were building directly in EPUB), but I have no idea how that would be fixed in a Word document -> Smashwords.

You will have to follow the Smashwords Style Guide TO THE TEE, or else you will continue to get all of these cryptic errors from their error reports.

Smashwords has a direct path now so you can use a tool like Atlantis to submit a real ePub directly which will solve the problem with the source word file causing errors.

At long as what Atlantis can output a valid ePub from the source doc that has so many issues, yeah, that is correct.
