Tablet output profile and CSS specified as %
Hi folks,
I have only recently noticed a problem with some of my ePub->MOBI conversions in both the calibre ebook viewer and my Paperwhite. Basically if the CSS within the ePub stylesheet has margins specified as a % rather than em or pt, then the resulting MOBI file has enormous amounts of distracting whitespace. I just now tracked down what I believe this is caused by. A very long time ago I switched my default output profile to "Tablet". I did this on the advice given that it would prevent images from being rescaled during conversions and there was "little other impact". While I only read on a Kindle today, I didn't like the idea that if I happened to convert a book that had larger images they would get "shrunk" compared to what I might want 5 years from now on some other device. However it would appear (guessing here) that calibre when it converts does need some sort of dimension to convert into MOBI. The net result being x% of some large tablet dimension resulting in a chapter heading ending up at the bottom of the page... Obviously I can switch back to Kindle profile in my defaults. But is there some other option or solution to this? I think ideally what I want is for my conversions to ePub to use a Tablet profile, and my conversions to MOBI to use a Kindle profile. Is there any way to do this? So effectively the page setup option to be overrideable for a specific format like "MOBI Output". Any thoughts appreciated, thanks! |

Why not convert to azw3 instead? That should have the same effect as an epub to epub conversion.

Because while I (recently) obtained a Paperwhite, my family who I share my library with do not. So I just stick to using mobi formats along with using the epub as the master to convert from.

IIRC, everything from the Kindle 3 onwards support azw3.
