Sony PRS-T2 Reader versus Amazon device?
Hey guys, I've got a Sony PRS-T2 E-Book reader here and so far the hardware has been great. However, I've run into some issues on the software side of things.
I've only ever owned a Sony PRS-T1 and my current PRS-T2. Sony has included Evernote with the PRS-T2 and this is what I've been using recently. I only want to be able to read e-books in e-pub and pdf format and be able to highlight quotes from books and put them in the 'Cloud' so that I can review the quotes later. I want the quotes to be 'un-editable' so that I can't make changes to them accidentally. The Sony/Evernote solution seems to be working so far. However, I'm thinking about buying an Amazon device if the Amazon device is better than the PRS-T2, but I don't know if it's worth it or not. I created a thread on my current situation with the PRS-T2 here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...12#post2671912 Does anyone here have experience both with the PRS-T2 and a Kindle Reader device? How does the software compare between the two products? Is it worth it for me to buy an Amazon device for what my needs are? I'd really appreciate help from someone who has experience with both devices! |

I'm really interested in what the cloud solution is like for the Amazon hardware? Are all your books and notes backed up onto the cloud? With my Sony software I don't know what would happen if my PC died because right now the PC is basically the 'leader' device and I just plug in my Sony Device into it to sync.
Thanks! |

Yes they are backed up, for all Amazon purchases, plus anything you store in the Amazon cloud as a personal document.

I haven't used it myself, but from I've read, the amazon annotation-taking and saving facilities are very good. Mind you, Evernote integration on the T2 sounds pretty good.

Yes, they are backed up in the cloud. There is even a special MyKindle website that you can log into with your account to view your notes. So it is kind of like Evernote. There also isn't the character limitation on highlights either. Amazon usually limits by percentage highlighted in the entire book (e.g. 10-20% max) rather than 100 characters per highlight.

Having used Sony devices extensively in the past, the main difference I'd highlight is the stability of the Kindle. It's pretty much rock solid, whereas the Sony firmware (last time I used it, at least, which was the PRS-T1) was pretty flaky.

Sony firmware is stable now. There was only a major issue with the initial release of the T1 which they fixed pretty quickly. Both brands have their occasional glitches, and I'd say they are equally stable.
The OP has been struggling with a series of posts in the last few months to get advice on how best to optimize note-taking with his Sony readers. I sympathize for what he is trying to achieve. The Evernote integration is cool and allows for backup of notes. However if you want to be able to restore your notes in the future then you have to sync with the Sony Reader for PC / Mac software which is frustrating to use and not as smooth as the old Reader Library was. The Kindle definitely has the best note-taking synchronization features presently. Everything is backed up to the cloud, and you can view it on the cloud. Most important of all to me is that I can take notes on my Paperwhite and then later read in the Kindle app on my iPad and iPhone and those same notes are there too. It just works. Sony has with their latest models and desktop software not made this same process smooth. Odd because it did work with the old Reader Library and my old 950. |

It seems like Evernote is the best way for me to go because Evernote is stored in the cloud so my highlights that I send to Evernote are in the cloud. Thank you! |

However, I don't know if there is a limit on how much I can quote. |

So, the hardware between the PRS-T2 and Kindle E-book Reader are fairly similar, but it's the cloud solution on the Kindle that is the real difference? |

There are lots of other differences - eg support. Amazon's support is the best in the business; Sony's is appalling (I speak from person experience, unfortunately).

I made some screenshots for you of what the Kindle cloud backup looks like. It has a benefit that you can see where in the book your highlight or note was (the Sony desktop solution has that info but Evernote does not). If you look at the bottom of my screen shot you can see I have some notes associated with highlights. It allows you to edit or delete them in the cloud and then the changes will show up on your book on your reader like magic. If all you want is to have your notes backed up in the cloud so you don't lose them if you reader breaks or your computer crashes, then I recommend to stick with the T2 Evernote combo. If you want to be able to restore your notes to your reader easily and switch among multiple devices as you read, then the Kindle is the better option. |

Alright, thanks a lot.
Regarding the Kindle Cloud solution, do you know if it's possible to make it so that you can't edit quotes you've taken from a book? One thing I was really worried by was how it was so easy to accidentally edit quotes in Evernote. However, I found a way to make the quotes uneditable in Evernote using a 'shared read-only' account. Is this possible in the Kindle cloud solution? Thank you! |
