page numbering: by chapter or by book -- Redux
By default my Kobo now displays the number of pages for each chapter instead of for the entire book.
In a previous thread I learnt I could remedy this by editing the file "Kobo eReader.conf" in a text editor. The file used to be in the directory <DRIVE LETTER>:\.kobo And you had to change this line from false to true: FullBookPageNumbers = true Now, for whatever reason (a change in the firmware or in one of the device interface plugins) the file is in <DRIVE LETTER>:\.kobo\Kobo But what's more annoying: every time I load a book onto the device with Calibre, the file is changed -- an that line is changed back from true to false. So the device starts numbering by chapter again. And in the device interface plugins (both KoboTouch by David Forrester and KoboTouchExtended are installed) I don't see an option that I can check or uncheck for this. Or am I overlooking it? Can I change something in the settings, or is there another way I can prevent my having to manually edit that file every time I load a book onto the device in Calibre? MTIA. |

I've never EVER heard of calibre changing the Kobo eReader.conf file, and as far as I know that file has ALWAYS been in the .kobo/Kobo directory.
That line should be added to either the existing [FeatureSettings] section, or if there is no section add both the [FeatureSettings] line AND the FullBookPageNumbers=true one. |

Okay, maybe I'd forgotten the location. I had thought it used to be one level up, I may be mistaken.
But just before I posted my question, I checked. And the file definitely *was* changed while I loaded a book onto the device with Calibre. It seems something in Calibre (a device interface plugin?) is updating the conf file everytime I load a book. Replacing it with a default. In principle that's fine -- if only I could find the menu in Calibre where I can specify *how* I want the conf file to be updated. |

Oh, I'm still on Firmware 2.8, by the way. Don't know if that makes a difference. And it's an Aura (not one of the new ones).

And I have just checked and doublechecked, and Calibre does do this.
Also, it has to do with loading a book onto the device. It's not just that Calibre does this on any interaction. E.g. I also deleted a book on the device, and that had no effect. |

It is being done by the extended driver. It has an option "Use full book page numbers". If that is checked, it updates the config file to have "FullBookPageNumbers = true". If it is not checked, the config file is updated to have "FullBookPageNumbers = false". Choose whichever you need.

Ah, yes. This must be a new feature in the plugin, because it didn't happen before (I think). And I overlooked it.
Still, a good thing since now it's documented here. And yes, it's a little annoying, Peter. But maybe it's also a good thing, because this enables people to set this feature through Calibre's GUI instead of by manually editing the conf file (which some users may find daunting). Although the plugin settings can be pretty daunting themselves, admittedly... |

My real problem is the fact that by enabling the easy setting of features such as this, the community is setting things up so that ANY removal of these undocumented features BY KOBO will result in a great deal of angst and complaining within the community.
