Apple Profit Falls Despite Strong iPhone Sales

SAN FRANCISCO — Unlike past years, Apple in September released two new iPhones instead of just one. The company’s financial earnings report on Monday offered the first hints that the new strategy might result in stronger overall revenue. Apple on Monday reported revenue of $37.5 billion in the latest quarter, up from $36 billion in the same quarter a year ago.

Still, the two phones did not help lift the company’s profit. Apple earned $7.5 billion, or $8.26 cents a diluted share in the latest quarter, down from $8.2 billion, or $8.67 a diluted share during the same quarter last year.

Eh, they've probably just written-off something against the profits - maybe something to do with the Cork Ireland location and the change in the Irish tax laws.

When considering a stock, you always have to consider percentages, not just overall value. When choosing, would you rather have 2000 shares of a $5 stock that goes up $5/share, or 100 shares of a $100 stock that goes up $5? I cannot see Apple's growth rate improving without a visionary at the top. They have a watchman up there now.

I can't see it improving a whole lot regardless of who's at the wheel. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The number of devices Apple sells is mind boggling. Now that the smartphone and tablet markets are starting to mature I don't think it's realistic to keep expecting huge growth, especially given their focus on the premium market. The only way that could happen would be if Apple would enter new markets. And even then, with their current huge numbers, it would take something unimaginable to equal the growth they saw with the iPod, then the iPhone, and then the iPad. Could it happen? Sure. pretty unlikely though.

Apple problem is finding more rich customers.

I've seen some bitterness on IOS forums about the 1gb of Ram they are still using in their new tablets, it is pretty cheap of them in honesty when even the cheapest rivals have at least 2gb.

That said I do like the new Mini I won't buy one but it's more appealing than I thought it would be beforehand.

They have to leave something out, so they have a "radically new, never seen before" feature to sell on the next version, like "now with double the RAM, this changes everything, again!". They also left out Touch ID on the ipads, so you can expect this to be hailed as a must have feature for the next refresh this time next year.
