Smile Again, the noob.

So converting from epub to epub in calibre seems to have replaced all the fancy curved close-quotation marks into a short string of unusual characters. I've seen it do this with a long dash symbol as well. Looks like I will have to go to each segment of the book and find-replace-all to change them back into simple keyboard quotation marks.

So what is that short character string called? They don't seem to be standard HTML tags. Do they always correspond to the same character, or are they random? If consistently the same, are they specific to calibre or are they used elsewhere? And can anyone point me toward a list of them somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

ASCII

quote(mark) AKA straight quote

Restore your original (you do see original_EPUB in the formats?) by using the right click option

Be sure to disable Smart quotes on the Heuristics section of the CONVERSION screen
Or better yet set a different codepage (CP1252 is a good first shot)

Thanks, coach!

I was opening the files with Open Office. It seemed to default to the Western Europe ASCII 1252. And I couldn't find an option for disabling the smart quotes. I think I was actually making the changes correctly in calibre, but Tweak was really scrambling things badly when I reassembled the exploded books.

So after a few failed efforts I downloaded Sigil, and was able to make the edits I wanted on the first attempt. I will try a couple other books in Sigil over the weekend, and if it works for them I will call this problem solved.

Many thanks for your assistance!
