Help with reference please

I preparing an ebook for the MR library of The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crane, Gent. written in 1820 by Washington Irving, and have come across a reference I can't trace. The text has 'learned Scriblerius contemplated his Roman shield,' and Scriblerius is not known to Google or Wikipedia. Does anyone know who he was and where the original text came from?

Could it be Martinus Scriblerus, and The Scriblerus Club?

Thanks, I'll try to track down Martinus Scriblerus.

I don't think it's related to the Scriblerus Club; it's definitely one person who has found something for which he'd longed for and searched for. And I've checked a couple of pdf sources and they both have Scriblerius with the 'ius'

It could be a fictional character that Mr. Irving created just for his book. He did create Diedrich Knickerbocker so after that anything seems possible.

Yes, that's certainly possible. But in the same paragraph he mentioned real people also looking for something. I didn't find anything with Martinus Scriblerus, so I guess I'll never know.
