New Temp Marker Feature
Love the pin, and the fact that the mark/unmark kb shortcut is a toggle.
But, when I marked the 3 books at the top of my library list, and then selected Show marked books I got a list of 35 books The extra 32 books were books that Find Duplicates had previously found (as in weeks ago) that I had excluded via its Mark current group as exempt option, I'd rather that these books not be shown as 'marked'. Which calls into question the supposed temporary nature of 'marks', as in this from the latest release notes - "This 'mark' will remain until you restart calibre, or clear the marks" Now that the 'marks' are visible I wonder if it might be better to segregate the 'marks' from Find Duplicates and the 'marks' from Temp Mark PI/Mark Books into two different camps. I'm guessing find duplicates has some extra facility for saving and restoring previously used marks, you will need to post in the find duplicates thread for that. There will likely be some way of clearing those saved marks, once you are done with them.

@kovidgoyal The reason for exempting the Duplicates books as a group, is to exclude them from being reported the next time Find Duplicates is run. So to remove the exclusions, which can be done with the Find Duplicates Remove Selected exemptions option, would defeat the purpose of excluding them.
Given that Find Duplicates predates the new Mark Books feature I see this as a shortcoming in the Mark Books feature, see also ==>> https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...8&postcount=17 BR |

If find duplicates wishes to store a set of books between sessions, it needs to do it in some fashion other than using marks. Or, more precisely, it is already storing excluded books using some mechanism other than marks (since marks are strictly temporary). It is then applying marks to all those stored books, presumably on calibre startup. It should not do that, instead it should mark books only when it is run. Since originally, marks were not displayed in the UI unless the user ran the marked:true search, find duplicates' behavior was acceptable, it isn't any more. There is nothing that core calibre can do to prevent a plugin like find duplicates from abusing marked books in this way.

As I said previously I find it all a bit confusing. When I first used Find Duplicates a couple of years ago, to see the excluded books I would select its Show all book duplicate exemptions and it would do a search for marked:not_book_duplicate
When Virtual Libraries were implemented that search 'ended up' as an Virtual Library Additional Restriction - even though the current library had no Virtual Libraries To bring the issue to kiwidudes attention I'll post a link to this thread in the Find Duplicates PI thread. BR |

These are all side effects of the evolution of calibre. Many features in current calibre did not start out that way, as a result some plugins have to adapt or their user experience becomes sub-optimal. For example, both virtual libraries and marked books are an evolution of long standing internal features of calibre that were used by find duplicates back when they were still internal. It's not find duplicates fault that those internal features have evolved, but nonetheless, it needs to evolve too.

As you suggested Find Duplicates appears to create the 'marks' when Calibre starts, I just installed a vanilla portable 1.6 and I don't see the 'extra' marked books
Unfortunately Find Duplicates cannot be disabled and I don't want to uninstall it because I think I might lose my exclusions - in my main library there are 200+ due to revisions, translations, 'plagiarisms' etc. ETA : for the record, the Find Duplicates exclusions did get gold stars in the cover grid in version 1.5 and earlier, but I don't use the cover grid so I never saw them, so they never bothered me. Also the gold stars/pins in the cover grid are not as obvious as the pins in the row number cells. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 10-11-2013 at 08:01 AM. |

add a tag to your exclusions and recreate them if you were need to in the future.

I'll have a play tomorrow with Portable and a test library to determine if uninstalling the plugin results in losing the exclusions; if it doesn't, then I can easily reinstall/uninstall as required, it doesn't have any complex config options - otherwise

I assume this means the Temp Marker Plugin is now included in calibre and the plugin can be removed?
ETA: This is the great thing about Calibre, the very active developer, and community involvement. The program is ever evolving to fit the users' needs. A big thank you to Kovid and the plug-in authors! Last edited by copyrite; 10-11-2013 at 11:08 AM. |

Yes, you can remove the plugin. You can also continue using it, if you prefer it's interface, both the new Mark Books button and the plugin do essentially the same thing.

Is there a reason that you can't add it to the Cover Browser Context menu?

But what's better is that if I reinstall Find Duplicates the exclusions get there pins back, as a consequence they don't show as duplicates when I do a Find Duplicates. I don't even lose my Find Duplicates keyboard customisations when I uninstall/reinstall. I can easily live with that as a workaround pending a resolution to Find duplicates use of 'marking' for exclusions. BR |
