Catalog creation crashes Calibre
Hello everyone!
I have a problem with catalog creation and I can't even get far enough to create a bug report before Calibre crashes. My problem is the following: I discovered the great feature of catalogs in Calibre. I decided to test it on a group of books (100 small files). The process starts, finishes, then Calibre doesn't respond, I can only choose 'Close Calibre' in the Windows error window (or wait, but then I'd just wait forever). After that I restart Calibre, see my empty catalog file - empty meaning that there's no format. Before it crashes I'm briefly able to access the Jobs dialog window to see the details. There I can see the Temp folder where the azw3 file is before it is finished. And the finished catalog is there alright, it just doesn't finish properly or something and doesn't show up in my main Calibre window. Can I just copy the azw3 from the Temp folder and use that catalog file? Does my PC not have enough memory to create a catalog, is that why it crashes? I'd appreciate any help. |

Hello kledor,
Try to generate a very basic catalog: Use "remove books" to delete any "empty" catalog files that have been created. Right-click the Library icon and select "Library Maintenance" > "Check Library" to make sure the library database hasn't been corrupted. In create catalog, click the "e-book options" tab and select only Authors and Titles. Skip "prefixes" and "other options" for now. Try to generate a catalog in EPUB format first. If it works, then try AZW3. Holler back with ![]() ![]() Marty |

Calibre slams resources hard. I frequently see that message on XP and W7 (both have lots of RAM). Pretty soon (can be minutes on big jobs), the GUI refreshes and the message clears. |

Same goes with the catalog. Calibre seems to stand still with the last % or says it's done but nothing happens. BUT I learned to trust the program and wait! In 99% calibre only freezes the display and not crashes! it is still working in the backround and only needs time to do the job. Try to make a catalog of a smaller number of books (like 5 or so) and see if that works. MiniMouse |

OK, I tried with a small number of books, waited, and it still stops responding. Even Task Manager shows that the program freezes, it's not just the GUI. No matter that Firefox uses way more memory than Calibre, even if I let the process run alone and quit everything else, it crashes.

Calibre-parallel finishes, no problem, then the calibre.exe freezes at the current memory and poof... nothing. |

You updated on the latest calibre version?
Other than that, I have no clue. We could only check all your settings step by step (maybe make a screenshot)? There could be some other problems like: Inconsistent Author Sort values Tag problems You should check out the 'If You Have Problems' part from Creating Catalogs. |

I checked, the files are not read only.
Yep, I have the latest version. I went through the 'Creating Catalogs' before I started the thread. Okay, I'll just give up, then. For now, at least. Last edited by kledor; 09-29-2013 at 03:20 PM. |
