Would this work for Calibr Server?
I just saw this on Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/02/w...unces-my-cloud and was wonder if this would be a good alternative to dropbox. The only way I can get dropbox to work is by using the public folder which I'm to afraid to do. I like my account to much to risk it. Using private folders doesn't work and I haven't found a go around.

Calibre specifically does not support network drives so I would not hold my breath, although it might work in cabled mode. See http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....rked-drive-nas

I believe Synergi was looking for alternatives to some kind of internet access to her ebook collection, but only if the communication can be better secured.

There are many ways to move books around and to access them on demand. Which to use, if any, depends on many factors. For example, calibre2opds works fine with dropbox to duplicate a library onto a device, especially when paired with dropsync. Running your own calibre content server may be the right solution, especially when paired with an appropriate client; this is what I do along with using calibre companion for metadata updating. Some use calibre's connect to folder function to maintain a folder of ebooks that are copied around using cloud services. Calibre companion satisfies in many situations, especially when the needs are related to accessing metadata. And so on. Without knowing any details about how access should work, what problems have been encountered, what app integration is required, what kinds of clients need access, and what "adequately secured" means, it is very hard to provide any detailed suggestions.

Yes, I just want to be able to access my catalog from any tablet while I'm away from home. Are people still using dropbox public folders for this? I heard they were banning accounts. I stuck mine in there briefly just to see what it looked like but then I tossed it into a private folder. I've tried it with Box.net, Copy, and a couple others and I just haven't been able to access the catalog with Moon+Reader. All the instructions I've been finding for setting up a server is about 2 years old and before the dropbox scare.

Why does the dropbox folder need to be public? Are you looking to give access to your library to people other than you? Of so, then you indeed well risk getting your account shut down if your library contains copyrighted material.
If you want to offer password-protected general access to your library then you need cloud storage that uses credentials that you are willing to give away. I do this for my family by hosting a calibre content server on a VPS, something that costs me money. Others host the server on a home machine that is exposed to the internet. Some others create a cloud storage account used only for this purpose ASB share the credentials, but the cloud company could decide to shut you down if they conclude that you are violating copyright. |

I perfer it not be public. I'm the only one accessing it. But all the instructions I've read are for setting it up on a public server, which did work when I tested it. But then I moved it to a non-public folder and the App I use, Moon+Reader can't access it. Is anyone able to access their catalogs through Moon? If so, how are you guys doing it?

Alternatively, moon+ pro has dropbox integration. It can open your private dropbox as a file system and let you navigate it. I tried it as I use dropbox to sync my library to my content server and indeed it lets you navigate by file name, eventually getting to a book and opening it. It does not allow you to search on metadata values. |

I choose to keep my entire 10,000 book library on my device. Previously on a tablet with less room I kept about 2000 books. Either way I had a substantial list of books to choose from at my fingertips. |

Most of my epubs are under 300K, even with a cover (I keep my cover dimensions to the 300x500 range which is fine for my 5" device)

I am confused. What value do you see in running an OPDS server on the tablet if he has all the books in calibre companion? CC's organizational, searching, and sorting features far outstrip what you get from an OPDS client.

I use Calibre Companion for managing my books on my device so have had no need to explore more limited book handling methods such as opds. |
