Show first page cover
I'm not sure if i'm blind or the feature doesn't exist yet but is there a way to show the first page cover of a pdf book so calibre have a cover image to show ?
I have a bunch of PDF with the proper cover in it but it doesn't show it as the book thumbnail in calibre. It seems that the only way to see a cover is to have the cover.jpg within the folder itself, I am missing something here ? thanks. |

You can create that cover from the book. But it has to be stored as a file named cover.jpg, in the folder, for it to show up in calibre.
And please note that there are some very severe limitations to what calibre can do with PDFs. It really isn't a good format for ebooks, especially if you need to convert or update them using calibre. Other tools may be better. Last edited by Adoby; 10-09-2013 at 08:31 AM. |

Changes should only be done by using Calibre GUI or CLI. (there are certain sleight-o-hands changes that can be done by knowledgeable persons or plugins) cover.jpg is the name Calibre assigns to the cover image calibre uses 1)in the Details view (and stores it in the books designated folder). 2)Send to Device/Save to disk. There are others (thumbnails) that are cached, but transient and will be rebuilt from the Library image. The cover (as defined INSIDE the book) may be a different image, a different filename. (in EPUB the internal OPF designates the filename used) |

If you go into edit metadata, you can set the cover image for the book from the PDF file. In the edit metadata screen, click on the PDF format of the book, so it is highlighted. Then click on the brown book icon. This is to 'set the cover of a book from the selected format' option. It will display several pages from the PDF file, choose your image, click ok/save, and you should be good to go.

@abuck - adding to previous posts, you can you extract the first image as the cover in Bulk Metadata Edit (select many books, press 'e') via the Change cover->Set from ebook files option.
If you do this in the Cover Grid view then its easy to see the books that didn't get a 'decent' cover, on those books you can use the Bulk Metadata Edit Change cover->Remove cover option. BR |
