New B&N/Nook Executives Appointed

Nook Media has just appointed two new senior executives:

http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-...30-910248.html

I hope this is a positive move for those of us who own Nooks.

Interesting:

1- they are still doing hardware engineering so they clearly will be doing new gadgets.

2- they brought onboard an exec with a background in *customer service*!!! and marketing.

Looks like they're finally ready to mend their ways. Hope its not too late.

I hope they can get things moving in the right direction-- I really like my Nooks and don't relish the thought of having to change devices.

I hope so too. My wife reads on a Glowlight and although I'm reading on a Kobo Aura HD these days we still buy books from Barnes and Noble. They give Amazon some real competition.

This is indeed hopeful news. I have been very happy with Nook products and would hate to see B&N discontinue the line or--worse--go the way of Borders. Thanks for posting!

I think this is good news, and I'm glad that they don't leave the market just to the big player. Not because I have issues with the big player, but because I feel it's bad for the end customer. Competition benefits us.

Since I literally just ordered a Kobo Aura yesterday to replace my Nook Glowlight with deteriorating screen, it would stand to reason that Barnes & Noble will announce new devices soon. Probably within the week. That's just my luck.

It wouldn't be too surprising if the new eInk devices they announce aren't Kobos. Nice strategy to sell eReaders through the stores, develop their online bookstore and do it all without R&D--but would Kobo agree to the deal?

Kobo would agree but B&N wouldn't have an inhouse hardware team (even if it turned out to be two guys in a cubicle) if they were intending to farm out the hardware. Besides, Nate the great at the Digital Reader Blog has found hints that Nook has a "Simple white" eink reader due this month.

Nate the Great may be right about B&N passing on the 6.8 inch screens: hardware development is expensive and working out the problems of manufacturing and distribution is headache enough.

I think they would be wise to distribute the 6 inch Aura from Rakuten in the US as only a hodgepodge of independent bookstores are half heartedly offering them now. If B&N would include the same two rendering engines used by Kobo they can try to duplicate the traditional feel (dare I say aura) of books as well as Kobo has. The point is that this strategy would keep the US market for new ePub eReaders for themselves.

The two employees Nate described as B&N's hardware development team could be busy working out the interface and linking the devices to the B&N store. At this point B&N's problem is to try to hold their customer base and for that they need to stay relevant, concentrate on the books, and forget about beating Amazon globally.

All is speculation. I just hope they stay in the game.

I'm with you. I have a Kindle not a Nook. I really like my Kindle, but I believe competition benefits us.
