To decide what to read next

Other than the book store run by the company that made your ebook or tablet what web sites help you decide what to read next? Here is an example of what I mean fictfact.com.

Just as an example, from reading discussions here (primarily in the Reading Recommendations threads) I have discovered the Repairman Jack series, the Dresden files and I've just picked up and started to enjoy the Harry Bosch books of Michael Connelly.

I use a variety of book review blogs, direct recommendations from friends (mostly online), and recs/reviews from my Goodreads friends.

I always tend to have a handful of possibilities in mind, and then just pick the one I feel in the mood for. I'm usually pursuing a few lists and a few authors and a few challenges, so there's always a next book I could read if there's nothing I just want to read. I usually like it to be something different to the book I've just read.

Also the format tends to have some effect. Sometimes I want to clear out some old paperbacks. Sometimes I might be going away and not want to carry a pbook with me. Sometimes it just seems a long time since I used a particular one of my ereaders, and I have a different selection on the kindle vs the epub readers.

I set myself general goals: eg, at the moment I'm reading all Agatha Christie's (non-romance) books in order, and all my old Baen books in order of purchase. In between these, I read whatever takes my fancy. So as a general rule of thumb at the moment I'm reading a Christie book, a Baen book, something else, another Christie book, etc.

Pretty much the same here, although I don't visit a lot of review blogs. Goodreads, Amazon forums, to some extent Mobileread forums, and recommendations/mentions by (online) friends are my main sources of finding out about potentially interesting reads.

Of course, that's for general ideas - for books to buy or put on wishlist.

For the actual decision regarding "which book to read next", I don't go to any website - either I have something specific in mind (generally only when a preordered new book in a favourite series has been released or I've read a book in a series and immediately want to continue with the next one) or I stare for a while at my Calibre library and/or spreadsheet of books bought and/or browse the collections on my Kindle for a while, to see if any of the titles there sounds more promising than the others at that particular moment.

Glad to be of service

And I hope you get as much pleasure out of the series as I did.

If I want to try something new and unfamiliar, I usually do so via the Overdrive library. I read the book descriptions and pick something that sounds interesting. If I like the book and it's part of a series, I will read the rest of the series, or if I find an author I like, I'll look for more of his/her books.

The books I purchase are usually authors I've discovered by reading library books.

Sometimes if I've read a book or two in a series and am not sure if I want to read further in the series (maybe I like the characters, but not the direction the story seems to be going) I will look up the next book in the series on Goodreads to see what people are saying about it.

I have a few authors' blogs & a review blog that get routed into my RSS feeds daily. The authors frequently allow others to guest post about upcoming new releases, and I've found a fair number of books that way. Having those posts routed directly to me via Feedly has been really effective, rather than having to check blogs regularly (before, I'd forget to check them for days or weeks at a time, and I can process through dozens of posts in just a short time this way). If a book that's been reviewed or discussed this way looks interesting, but I'm not ready to buy just yet, I'll send the post to Pocket and tag it so I can find it later.

Recommendations here provide me with quite a few as well. I tend to watch the threads in the Deals & Reading Recommendation sections, but I've found people mention books and authors they've enjoyed in just about every part of MobileRead.

I usually use Goodreads, or post on Facebook that I can't decide what to read next and friends give suggestions.

It's been so long since I last reached the end of my 'To Read'-list, so I can barely remember where I heard of the books on it. I believe most of them were bought on a whim in a book store or recommended by friends.
