I think when they first came out with the Nook Color, they actually suggested you could use it with a lanyard. As if anyone would! But I've never seen anything that implied it actually had a purpose.

I think it's a design feature more than anything else. It started with the Color, and then they kept it to sort of keep the look. While it looked kind of nice on the Color/Tablet I'm not crazy about it on the HD+. But that's just my opinion, of course.

B&N used to sell little charms to hang from the hole, which just seemed like another way for them to make money to me.

Yeah, it seems odd they ditched it for the HD but kept it for the HD+.
