Calibre upgrade crashes my computer

Has this happened to anyone else? I upgraded Calibre and my windows 7 laptop became very, very slow. Managed eventually to uninstall Calibre, then downloaded it again - and it happened again.
My very old previous version was not causing any problems.
Anyone got any ideas?
Where can I get a previous version to try? (can't live without it....)

Look slightly further down the Calibre Windows download page, there is a link to other editions

Until recently I was using an old laptop with a recent-ish version of calibre (within 5 versions of "current"). While there were versions that caused additional system lag, nothing caused a crash to desktop (CTD) or blue screen of death (BSOD) like you're talking about. I got one BSOD on a really hot & humid day after running for several hours and without adequate airflow around/through the laptop.

If you know your old version number, I would suggest updating it by +.4 increments (basically, monthly) until you get the CTD/BSOD. Then revert to the most recent old version that doesn't cause the problem.

But I would also suggest that you get a can of compressed air to clean the laptop. Laptops are fairly notorious for having poor ventilation. I'm assuming you're out of warranty, so with the laptop off and unplugged, carefully take off any removable hatches/accessways and use short bursts to blow off any dust build-up. Particularly around the cpu, fans, graphic cards, and any airflow vents/openings. Any of these could be covered or clogged with dust.

Cleaning electronics in this way is particularly important if you have hairy pets (so your naked mole rat doesn't count) or if you are a smoker (nicotine is sticky and builds up over time allowing dust to almost get "glued" onto components). Dust in general is the enemy of any electronic equipment; with homes being cluttered with more and more stuff, this is getting to be a serious problem.

Hope this message is of some help to you.

@midlifec - It may be some 'third party' application - have you exhausted all the possibilities here http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....ing-on-windows

What happens if you run Calibre in Safe Mode

In Win 7 you can 'set up' safe boot for the next boot in msconfig - see attachment
