Calibre won't start

Directly after installing the latest 64 bit-version of Calibre on Windows 10 Pro Calibre won't come up with the user interface. Clicking the Calibre icon again won't help also.

I've checked this with the latest version and some 3.31 version.

I've also disabled a few startup applications to check whether there's some kind of a problem. The Windows 10 load at Calibre startup is very low.

What can cause this sudden problem?

There is a FAQ on this (do check the FAQ's).
But I suspect you may have had a corrupt download

BTW 3.38.1 is the latest

@TomSpot - if FAQ doesn't help, and reinstall of latest version doesn't work, do this:

Press WinKey+R, type calibre-debug -g, press Enter, this will open a command window and display some information, cut and paste that information here, viz:

I've deleted and reinstalled the latest version of calibre. I've run ccleaner to cleanup registry issues.

That does not indicate a (reportable) issue
What does the Task manager show?

This subject can be closed. The best advice was the one above to check the FAQ on this particular issue. I've disable my antivirus application. I think metadb.db was causing the problem.

So thanks for the help. Calibre is working flawless again.

@vanbode - try disabling your AV, if that doesn't work try running calibre in Windows Safe Mode.

@TomSpot - if you tell us which AV, we could update the FAQ

If metadata.db was triggering a problem, I would replace your A/V.
metadata.db is a SQL database (data tables), the core of calibre.
What was really terrible, the A/V should always complain loudly when it finds something bad so you know (and avoid doing possible bad places)

1.) Disabled Defender
2.) Uninstalled Calibre
3.) Re-install Calibre in administrator mode
4.) Run calibre.

Still fails after splash screen. I'm not new to running Calibre. I've been using the Calibre software for many years. I have almost 11,000 books in my library and everything was working fine until the damn windows update on 1/20. I was hoping Windows had screwed the pooch and would offer an update that cleared up this issue. Nope.

Are there any other hints? Workarounds?

With calibre not running (check the task manager. Just because you don't SEE it on screen...)
Delete (or rename) the Calibre config folder. YOU WILL LOSE ALL PLUGINS AND USER SETTINGS, but NOT the Library.
When you next start Calibre, it might not find the Library if you changed the path/name. No biggie
Right click the Library Icon: Switch/create:Use Existing:< navigate to the Library folder>

I ended up doing a windows recovery and reinstalled the OS. Calibre wasn't the only SW that wasn't working. The Vivaldi browser, as well as Google Earth, would not run reliably or at all.

I do want to thank those who responded for the advice.

Thank you.
