Kobo Glo
I bought a Kobo Glo in March and it worked perfectly - until the power-button broke 3 weeks ago.
On Tuesday I got a new one. I put my SD card from the old Glo in and started reading. My problem with the new one is: it takes ages to start it (at least 5-10 minutes). It freezes in the middle and only a hard factory reset works. Yesterday I used the hard factory reset, formatted my SD card and added the books anew (because I wasn't sure if there was a problem with the library or SD card). When the Glo is in its sleeping mode, I can wake it up in a few second. Today I tried a restart and after it completely froze (again) I waited and after about 10 minutes it was "unfrozen". Now I am wondering: is it the firmware version 2.8.1? or is it the Glo itself? I'm thinking about giving it back... I'm annoyed with my new Glo and sad. Starbooks P.S: Sorry if there are grammar mistakes but English is not my mother language. |

I have about 2500 books on my Glo...
So what do you do about it? Do you always keep it in sleeping-mode? Doen't it shorten the battery life that way? Thanks! starbooks |

I just keep it in sleep mode always (unless there is a good reason to turn it off)... if you do turn it off, BE PATIENT! Don't say, oh, it's frozen, time for a reset or factory reset. It just takes time and is not really frozen. The more books the longer this initial boot takes. Maybe they will fix this in another firmware, but it's not the device, it's the firmware, so don't bother trying to exhange for that reason. You can either keep in sleep mode or put your books in main memory or keep minimal books on the SD card. For me the best solution is to keep in sleep mode. I don't use wifi much, but my battery still lasts 2-3 weeks only using sleep mode, so unless this is a huge issue, I would recommend this solution until things get fixed. |

hey guys,
I'm reading about a lot of bugs in regard to the Kobo Glo. I'm torn between the Paperwhite and Glo, not sure which one to buy. I've read the Glo has better light, so that would be a big plus. But what use when it's totally unstable? |

There is nothing wrong with the Glo....although I like to sideload, so I never connect to the Kobo Servers to receive updates. I am sticking with firmware 2.6.1, as I like the sliders and the next update took those away. The Glo is great, I like it better than my Paperwhite.

It's not that the Glo is unstable, it just has some little annoying bugs. And depending what reader you're coming from will determine how annoying those bugs are to you or not.
But the light is definitely fantastic on the Glo. That's one thing they did absolutely right and I feel better than the Paperwhite. |

Thanks for the feedback,
I'm currently using the Kindle2 with 3.x firmware flashed on it. It never crashes on me and has been a very good reading device. I'm also thinking about just using it until it dies ![]() Although better resolution, contrast and the light are sure nice to have. Maybe it's also worth waiting for the next generation ^^ |

I purchased the paperwhite last week after months of pondering whether to switch to an eBook reader after years of tablet usage, both iPads (all iterations including the mini) and androids, Samsungs and the nexus 7.
Can't wax ecstatic enough about the welcome change of not having weary eyes after hours of reading. I am rediscovering the pure joy of reading all over again. I should have tried eBook readers much sooner. The reason why I stayed away at first from the kindle PW was the blotchy and uneven screen lighting. I was fortunate that the one I got is pretty much evenly lighted and had practically zero blotches. I guess they already had enough time to improve after almost a year of manufacturing. I narrowed down my first eBook reader to the kindle PW and the Kobo Glo because these were the only ones available where I live. I really wanted to try out the Kobo Aura HD, but these were nowhere to be found. I finally settled on the kindle PW because the Kobo Glo screen was not as responsive or snappy or accurate as the Kindle. I guess if I didn't have the chance to try out the kindle, the kobo would have come off as passable. But after road testing both in the flesh, it seems that capacitive screens are the way to go. The kobo front lighting is definitely brighter at all levels versus the kindle, but does appear harsher and too bluish in hue compared with the kindle. The kindle is easier on the eyes. The kobo lighting isn't flawless though. I noticed blotchiness or shadows at the bottom of the screen. But nothing serious really. Pity the kindle doesn't have the dedicated on/off switch for the light like the kobo's. Finally, there is that x factor as far as feel is concerned, but maybe that's just me. The kobo feels like a toy as far far as fit and finish is concerned. The kindle PW just feels plushier. I am still on the hunt for a Kobo Aura HD. But I may wait for the next iterations from both kindle and kobo. Meanwhile, I'm a happy camper with the kindle PW. It looks like I'll be able to squeeze a few hours of reading on it daily without needing to be tethered to an ac outlet for at least a week. That's the most welcome change in my transition from tablets to my first eBook reader! Last edited by superairwolf; 08-27-2013 at 04:02 AM. |
