Managing Tags

I am trying to reduce the number of tags by selecting unique tags with a tag count less than some value (say <5). I was trying to use tag:count, but I am beginning to realize that is probably a count of the number of tags for a specific book - not what I am after. I have tried the Manage Tags function, but the search, searches only for strings within the tags and apparently has no way to search the Count field. I have been through the help pages but can't find anything there.

What I want to do is delete any tags that are used (for starters) on only one book. I can do this manually with the Tag Manager, but with over 10,000 unique tags, this is a monumental task. Can anyone help?

Most likely it would be possible to write a program to dump all tags to a file, sorted by number of occurrence. And after editing this file you could use it to delete all tags that match the tags in the file from the calibre library. Perhaps someone already has written this program?

Could even be combined with tag remapping.

In the Tag Browser: (at the bottom):Alter Tag browse: Sort by popularity:

now you can see the Tag by usage [1]

How many books do you have?

I have about 10000 books and only 238 tags.

It might be easier to Remove all of the tags and start from scratch. That's what I did and went from 1000 tags down to 238 using the Goodreads Metadata Source plugin to download tags from only Goodreads. In this post I explain how I did it and share my Goodreads.json file which allows you to map the tags from Goodreads. My goodreads.json file only maps about 300 tags from Goodreads, there are more if you wish to manually add them read this post.

Thanks everyone - after posting I realized I can go to manage tags and sort by the count field - then it is simple to select all tags with less than 10 entries and then delete them. Works like a champ.... thanks for the other suggestions tho
