Angry Withdrawal of dictionary PDFs (TREMENDOUS need for Sony-dictionary: 1,400+ downloads)

Hi! ... just would like to mention that by today OVER 1,000 users have downloaded an English-to-ITALIAN (!) dictionary:
"Dizio_IngItaliano3.pdf" (and "...4p.pdf" / link below) that I created from a free source dictionary file.
It uses SONY's ability to do page jumps in PDFs in a "simple" but -it seems- usable way.

As it contains a very special language combination (English for Italian-born readers) I can't even imagine how vast the need might be for more populous combinations (maybe to Spanish? ...French? ...German?** ...even Chinese/Japanese?).

(I'm NOT begging for karma, am I?)

* I checked in the attachment search and found out that only TWO books uploaded EVER to MobileRead were downloaded more often - and one of these is available since june last year (Harvard Classics, Vol. 05 / Schroeder, Karl: Ventus). Following the dictionary are Jane Austen, Shakespeare and the BIBLE - all again uploaded nearly one year ago!)

** Just for Germans: My English is good enough - at least for reading... If I'd get feedback/demands to do an English-to-German dictionary I might do one, though. (Would anybody be prepared to pay a very small "shareware" fee? Please answer if interested...)

Angry Withdrawal of dictionary PDFs ...

Sorry.

Edit: I today withdrew all of my previously attached PDF dictionary files.

I had asked for feedback on their usability but only got posts from exactly *T*W*O* members - as compared to over 1,400 downloads...

(I don't mind anybody else placing any of these PDFs in a new thread. But I won't engage in this project any more.)

*BUMP!*

Even though I don't have any personal interest in language<->language dictionaries, I thought it's a real shame that no-one has bothered to provide feedback on what seems like a very useful resource.

Clemenseken, I came across this thread too late to look at your PDFs. But if you're happy to put them back up, I'll gladly give you feedback, although as I said above, I have no personal interest in actually using these PDFs for myself.

Are you sure that wasn't 1400 *viewings* rather than downloads? That's the only number I see. Sorry, I'm not one for whom a foreign language dictionary is needed.

...that's the only number you CAN SEE NOW - as I removed the attachment files.

(1450 was the added number of 4 different attachment file viewings. But I can't think of a way to "view" an attachment without downloading it first.
Can you? If there is a way please tell me ...)

...and you made me find my very old Oxford Dictionary. Thanks Dajala! (I'm glad you appreciate my tantrum. It helps, you know.)

It's rather frustrating to see thousand(s) of people taking something for free and nobody giving any feedback. The PDFs were not scanned from an existing book but I made them up from scratch (I'm not a native English writer).

If anyone of the downloaders thinks my withdrawals a pity he can start a new thread. (I'll send the attachments to anybody asking for them.) If that's too much trouble it's probably simply not worth the effort ... don't you think so?

I mean: it might as well be that lots of people were attracted by the idea but nobody really found the PDF solution good practically...

There's also the scenario of:

- downloaded the file, intending to make use of it later and not having found time for it yet.

I too am interested in a dictionary for my Sony, and find it unfortunate that one wasn't integrated initially.

Probably at some point I'll look at taking the WordNet datafiles and making a .pdf of them, optimized for the Sony, but no matter how well it's done, it's simply not going to be as convenient as it is on a Kindle, or in Adobe's ebook reader app w/o support on Sony's part --- the best scenario I can work up is:

- make note of the word one wants to look up
- bookmark the current page in the current book
- bring up the bookmarks page
- go to a persistent bookmark for the dictionary
- navigate to where the word is and read the definition
- go back to the bookmarks page
- select the bookmark, return to one's place, clear the bookmark

One other thing to be aware of: we apparently had a massive number of thread hits from a mis-configured browser recently. There are several books that this happened to where the thread showed a huge number of viewings (a couple thousand), but they were all actually just one person. I'm afraid I don't understand the details well enough to explain them to anyone else ... or to myself, for that matter.

Anyway, that may be what happened to your dictionary, Clemenseken. It would certainly explain why you never got much of any feedback.

You are right NatCh, that may have been the case with my PDF files (4 pieces of them), too.

Actually I have not given up on the idea of getting a jolly-good working (PDF) dictionary for my Sony eReader, yet. But as this is not my daytime work my time for playing with it varies very much...

Maybe the people that downloaded your dictionary didn't happen upon your post asking for feedback. Maybe they don't read the forum much if they're still learning English. Maybe someone on another forum posted a link to the file and bunches of people grabbed it without ever coming here to look around. Just a thought.
