Calibre books lost

Not sure where to put this but I opened my Calibre this morning and there are no books in there. They aren't in the Calibre folder in my computer either. I am assuming I can't get them back but is there a way to prevent it happening again? thanks.

Oh right. Thank you. I will do that. Can I prevent this happening again though?

Something deleted the files and from your description there is no clue as to what did it. Unless you accidentally did it yourself it, it could be anything running on your PC/Mac.

Most likely it is very easy to prevent, but how depends on what "this" exactly was. Just try to not do what caused "this" again.

Once, many years ago, when I worked as an IT guy on a small company, I was asked to help fix a problem with a computer that seemed to reboot while the user received phone calls from the boss. It never happened during other calls or when working on the computer.

I replaced all the cables and we moved the phone to another side of the desk, and switched network jacks and phone jacks. Nothing helped. Now and then, always during a call with the boss, the computer would reboot.

I passed by after a few weeks and saw the user was in a call. I later found out that it was the boss. I stopped and watched. After a few minutes the user pushed back slightly from the desk, leaned backwards in the office chair, turned the chair a little towards a big calendar on the wall, and crossed one leg over the other and started to wiggle the foot up and down while the phone conversation continued. The wiggling foot was now just a few centimeters from the reset button on the computer.

Setting wit aside, as you described the problem what you experienced is most likely not a calibre issue. The only way to remove all of your books from the library is to select all books and click on remove books Or Ctrl-a then delete. Either way it would require a conscious effort on your behalf.

A more likely scenario is that you accidentally dragged and dropped the library folder while in a file manager. If you search your computer for the file metadata.db you might be able to find the library. The metadata.db file will be in the the root of the library folder structure.

Thank you. I did find it and can see when I might have unintentionally moved the folder when messing with other things.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

I have to say backup. Use zip or winrar and backup your library all in one place. Update it every now and then.

OR depending on the size of the library copy it to a thumb drive or sd card if lacking in hard drive space. SD cards are getting inexpensive at around 25 or less for 32 gig.

Our libraries are usually many, many hours of work.

Also, take a look at your recycle bin to see when it was deleted. It may give you an idea of what happened from the time of deletion.
