Authors similar to Anthony Trollope?

Saw my dad on the weekend and he tells me he is greatly enjoying the Kobo we got him for father's day. He seems to be only reading classics right now. I showed him Manybooks.net and he is loving it. He dabbled with the 100 free books on the Kobo, re-read some boyhood favourites (which mostly seemed to be Dickens, and somebody called 'Masefield' I have never heard of) and tells me that he is currently really enjoying Anthony Trollope, who was new to him.

So, he'll be done with the Trollope soon. What else might he enjoy?

He might like Wilkie Collins also, although there's an awful lots of Trollope out there that he should be through with him as an author quite so soon?

He might like Galsworthy, Anthony Powell, Elizabeth Gaskell, Thackery - for starters.

poohbear, thanks for the suggestions.

I have no idea if he's read all of them yet or not. He told me he's plowing through them and really enjoying them.

He should try The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy.

I don't think it's possible to read all of Trollope!! I've been at it for 15 years and there are still a bunch I haven't gotten to (well, I've reread a bunch)

Anyway, I got into Trollope when I was looking for someone sort of like Jane Austen, and they are weirdly alike. So tell Dad to read Austen.

If he likes Trollope he may well like E.F Benson, especially the Mapp and Lucia series.

Angela Thirkell wrote a series of novels set in Barsetshire in the 30's and 40's. I've read and enjoyed several of them. They sometimes refer back to characters and events in Trollope's Barsetshire novels.

I've not seen these in ebook form. Sadly, some of the first in the series are out of print now - Moyer Bell had been releasing paperback versions - but seems to have halted.

All my Angela Thirkell books (13) are used. I didn't think to check ebook availability. Unfortunately it seems that many mid-20th century books are still in copyright but of insufficient commercial interest to be published as ebooks. Now that it has been more than 50 years since Angela Thirkell passed away, perhaps her novels will start to become available as public domain ebooks in +50 countries.

Right here on MobileRead
- thousands and thousands of ebooks, and most are probably a LOT better formatted than Manybooks.
