Hello!
I have recently got a iPAQ, and fallen in love with mobile reading. I found this forum (which looks good) in the process of search for an answer to a question.
My ms reader cannot display some symbols in a ebook, which are dispalyed alright in my desktop version of the same software. I know it may be casued by some missing font, but how do i determine which one? Any idea would be appreciated. |

Hi, welcome to Mobileread!
That's a tricky one.... I'm not sure how you'd determine if it's a missing font, except by trial and error. What sort of symbols are not displayed properly, and how are they incorrect? We might be able to deduce something from that. Craig. |

Thanks for the response
the symbols that cannot be displayed are the icons for male female, they appear alright in line with the rest of the text on my desktop, but become big black boxes that take up 80% of my ppc screen.

Hmm, I would have thought those might be actual images inserted into the document, unless there's a windows font that has them in it (wingdings?). You could load up the font viewer on the control panel (if you using window$) and have a look. That might be the problem (though I don't really think it is).

I took a look into fonts on my desktop, more than two fonts have those symbols. Got stuck here, 'cause there are 216 fonts to try.
If those symbol were inserted as pictures, what is there to do to view them properly? Thanks! |

Those symbols turned out to be images embeded into the ebook. I have a image viewer installed on my ppc that supports major image formats, but ms reader just refuses to display them. Anyone got any ideas, please?

MS Reader should handle images within the document. I don't know why your book's not displaying properly, I'm sorry. Maybe you could try searching the knowledge base on MS web site?

It seems that only GIF images suffer this problem, and JPG (such as book covers) are doing fine. I decomposed the book, changed all gif images into jpg format, re-composed it, and that's it, all of those symbols are displayed properly now.
I have done a search earlier on MSDN, and it says ms reader supports GIF/JPG/PNG images. It is not the case on my iPaq 2200, strangely. Last edited by theTiger; 09-23-2004 at 04:46 AM. |

I'm glad you were able to resolve your problem. I don't think I've ever used gif's in my docs, so I've never encountered the problem.
Good work! Craig. |
