Question author from author sort

we have a button that generates a correct author sort from the author field.

could we have one that works in reverse please, or is that problematic. I have often times imported a book where the author sort field is correct but the author field is populated wrongly ( typically it is the same as the sort field). A button would be more convenient than having to manually edit.

Cyb

You can use Bulk Mode Search and Replace to select in author_sort: (.+) and replace in the authors: \1

The Quality check PI also has some author manipulation tools

If you hold down the button, you get an option to go either direction -- I've used both, as needed. Unless I am misunderstanding the question.

that's the answer I was looking for,thanks

I never thought to try "hold down the button" !
( I'd spotted the little down pointing arrow thingie in the lower right corner of the button , and I'd spent a while trying to accurately click on it , to no avail, so I figured it was just window-dressing. A quick click has no effect. )

So is that documented or did you just stumble across it ?

PS not that i need it, but surprisingly you can't do that with the title to title sort button though

Yes it is documented... Somewhere I think it was the release notes when it was added

Another place is the Balloon help on the button
BTW
there are two arrow (placement) types used in Calibre:

Mid level arrow: (right-click type) Menu available, button is default action
Bottom Level arrow: There is a sub-Menu

I think I learnt of it in these forums- or maybe in Becca Prices' help module

Having to access this context menu by 'left click' on the v, or by 'left click and hold' on the button is inconsistent with most (all ?) similar Calibre 'widgets' that have a v indicating the presence of a context menu.

Many of the buttons on the toolbar have a v and 'right click' can be used to show the context menus. A 'right click' in the adjacent Author's field in metadata edit, which also has a v, will show its context menu.

A side effect of not using 'right click' to access this context menu, is that the 'menu key' found on most modern keyboards also can't be used in the normal way.

Other major uses of 'left click and hold' are to do drag/drop operations, and in graphics programs to draw lines, re-arrange objects etc.

Maybe its a quirk of the Qt GUI library...
