new paperwhite wrong time zone

I did a search and I can't seem to find my particular issue. I have a new Paperwhite. (Yay!) The time was wrong (both hours and minutes) and I found the tip to turn the wifi on and "sync and check for new items." Well that corrected the minutes but not the hours. I live on the East Coast, it's 10:34am here and my Kindle says 2:34pm. So it thinks I'm in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? I am registered with Amazon and they have my address.

Any ideas? Am I supposed to set my time zone on Amazon somewhere?

You can simply set the clock hour in Settings > Device Options > Device time.
I tried changing the timezone through SSH, the change did reflect on the time returned by the date command but not on system time in pillow (top bar)

Yep, much easier just to set the time yourself.

I always have to set the time on my Kindles when I first get them but they keep the time after that except for when Daylight Savings Time kicks in then it's off an hour. Even after a restart it still remembers my time zone after the first set.

My kindle keyboard used to loose the time and I'd have to reset it. My paperwhite has kept the right time since I set it when I originally set it up.

Oh der. I thought Amazon would do everything for me*, it did not occur to me to set the time myself.

I have now set the time and we'll see if it sticks.

*I put the kindle right next to my coffeemaker this morning and it didn't make me coffee either.

That's because nasty Amazon is a 'closed' agricultural system and it's Kindles will only make coffee from growers who sell and roast exclusively to Amazon. Adobe on the other hand will allow you to brew coffee from any grower and the beans can be roasted in whatever way you wish, so you should've bought a Sony e-reader/coffee brewer so you could use Adobe's beans....uhhh....oops...sorry, I think I may have been channeling Jon there for a moment!

It might also have to do with where the Kindle shipped from. Some Kindles no doubt prefer tea to coffee.
