Is the numer of files limited Calibre can handle in a decent time?

I'm not sure to really put all my files to calibre. I'm afraid it will slow down and can't really handle it. The hardare should be fast enough (Mac with I7 and 16GB RAM), but up tho what number of files Calibre will really do. Are there some experiences?

Thanks a lot.

whatever YOU have, you are probably not close to the limit

I think I have heard of libraries of 20K books.
I have 5K+ on a lowly P4 on XP or Ubuntu. Not instant, but nothing else is either

I have about 13000 books on a I7 Windows 7 OS and I have not run into any appreciable slowness.

You should be fine.

Recently moved a 24,000+ library from an I7 with 16GB, to an I5 with 6G RAM (both Win 7) - I barely notice the difference - plenty fast enough for me on both boxes.

If it slows down depends on you.

Things that may cause calibre to slow down are:
  • Complex custom columns that depends on other columns, especially if you sort on them.
  • The presence of a column with the available formats. Calibre will under some circumstances check the actual files in the library to see what those formats are, and that can take a long time.
  • Displaying the tags browser when you don't actually use it.

If you avoid these issues you should be able to handle several 100K books without problems.

Some of the issues are discussed here:
