Charge battery without computer?

I am new to Kobo and have tried searching for the answer to this without luck. Is it possible to charge the Aura HD without connecting it to my computer? Every other USB device I own will charge with a wall charger, but my Aura HD just sits there as if it's not plugged in at all. Is it charging, even though it doesn't give me any indication? I don't want to have to drag my laptop with me on vacation just to charge my reader.

Yes, just plug the provided micro USB cable into an USB AC wall charger that you already have. Also - and this takes a lot of getting used to! - when you connect the Kobo to the computer, a dialogue box will appear on the Kobo screen. You must select "Connect" for the computer to recognize the device, otherwise, like you said it just sits there doing nothing Once you tap "Connect" the screen will then change to "Connected & Charging" or "Connected & Charged" (will depend on your battery state).

Hmmm...I know about selecting "Connect" when the Aura HD is plugged into the computer, and that works fine, but my problem is that when I use a wall charger, I don't see anything to indicate that the reader is charging. It just sits on my Home screen as if it's not plugged in at all. The little battery indicator on the top right of the home screen doesn't change. I've used two different cables, including the one that came with the Aura HD. Should I be seeing the "Connected and Charging" screen when I use the wall charger? (Edit: "Connected and Charging" wouldn't be correct, since it's not really connected to anything but the wall outlet, but shouldn't I see something that indicates that the battery is charging?)

Some USB chargers are designed in such a manner that the Kobo's will not display the charge / connect message. For instance, if I attach my Kobo to the charger that came with my Nexus 7, I am not prompted, however the charging indicator does it's I'm Charging animation.

On the other hand, using a totally generic, no-name USB wall-charger does result in the menu option to select connect mode.

Actually, not true. You can click cancel and it won't connect to your computer (ie you can't add files, etc), BUT it WILL charge!!! If you are reading in front of your computer or just want to play with it while it's charging and it's most convenient to charge with your computer, you can just click cancel and keep using your Kobo as it charges.
When doing it this way, you won't have a blank screen with "connected & charging", ...it should show a small icon on the battery indicating it's charging though....

Actually, the messages on the original Kobo when connected to a computer were more self explanatory: 'Keep Reading' and 'Manage Your Library'.

Should do; any USB charger has worked for all other Kobo eReader devices.

Are those 1000mA (1.0A) output or 500mA (0.5A) output chargers?

At one time computer USB ports only allowed 800mA or less charging.
Now there are devices that have wallwarts that provide 1.2A to USB devices.

Lithium batteries can be tricky about such things.

Luck;
Ken

I've charged my Glo with a variety of microUSB chargers. The lithium battery charging circuitry controls the current to the battery. Just because the adapter can provide the higher current makes no difference, it is wholly dependent on the charging circuitry in the device -it controls the current applied to the battery.
