Hi My sony has just died and I am looking at a paperwhite.
I have all my books in calibre in epub format. Will there be any issues converting them to mobi? Any other advice appreciated. thanks |

If the books are DRM free there should be no real issues converting them to Mobi/AZW or KF8/AZW3.

Uh, no. They convert beautifully. But I would recommend converting to KF8 (AZW3) which supports enhanced formatting, i.e. dropped caps, etc.

Thanks guys,
Is there a setting in calibre for KF8 (AZW3)? Sorry, should have checked before posting. I see the setting Last edited by lawrie; 06-05-2013 at 01:27 PM. |

If you're books are pretty standard texts, I imagine that converting to .mobi would be perfectly adequate.

AZW3 is a proprietary format. You can't use the free ap Send to Kindle with AZW3, because you shouldn't be able to do that with a book purchased from Amazon. So far, I keep my books in mobi. I haven't had any issues with formatting from converting from epub to mobi.

If his books are already in Calibre then he would use that instead of Send to Kindle App. I would ask in the Calibre forum as to how to set up Calibre to send to your PW in AZW3 format.

Why are you thinking of an Kindle rather than a new sony reader? Sony is sort of like the devil you know.

The reason it will not accept something without mobi segment is that not all apps and devices support kf8, for example the ios app does not. This way it will work on any kindle or app. The only restriction is that the file size needs to be less than 50 MB. |

I was showing a friend how to convert from epub to .azw3 or .mobi, and during the lesson, asked her to show me that she could do it without me hanging around to tell her step by step... she wasn't thinking clearly (or perhaps she was) and instead of doing a conversion, just did a straight Send to Device... whereupon Calibre asked her if she wanted the file converted... the answer of course was yes... I don't know what it got converted to, but it worked beautifully. Like me, she has a bazillion epubs (non-DRM) but was given a Kindle as a gift. She does some reading in iBooks on her iPad, but thus far had not "done" Kindle. I think thats changed now.
Anyone know what this conversion process does? azw3 or mobi? Also... if you want to store your own books as docs on Amazon... is it better to convert to azw3 or mobi? I really have no clue. |

Converting to azw3 allows the Kindle file to retain more of the formatting options available for the epub. Azw3 files seem to be a bit larger than the older Kindle files as a result. I switched to azw3, mainly, because I am an ultra-hip and hyper-modern type of fellow. I eschew all that is old, quaint, and fuddied to the duddy. |
