Jack Vance dead at 96
Jack Vance died in his sleep Sunday, although I only learned about this from MobileRead member Fbone, which he mentioned in another post.
I remember how captivated I was of "The Dying Earth," and how it affected me as one of the most important and entertaining tales of fantasy that I have ever read. His novels were hugely influential in the realms of fantasy and science fiction. Don Last edited by Dr. Drib; 05-30-2013 at 07:59 PM. Reason: Died May 26 - NOT yesterday |

I cannot begin to calculate how much of my high school and college work went undone because I was reading the Dying Earth, the Dragon Masters, the Last Castle ...
Very sad news. |

He leaves a great legacy behind him... I've wasted many happy hours immersed in his books and short stories over the years as I acquired all of his work to read in DT format... his work had a big influence on other writers over the years and helped prove that SF/Fantasy could be written stylishly as well... RIP

Recently picked up a few of his books from his website. Not someone I read in my earlier days, but he seems to be someone I would like.

His books were probably among the first SF I ever read. I still like his books quite a bit -- much less technology focused than other writers, it's more about the individuals and their societies.
It is sad he passed away. |

My condolences. I've just started collecting his books from his site as they have always intrigued me, especially his Lyonesse books.

I have a lot of his books in paper. I started reading his as a child. I am sorry to say that I have nothing of his in eBook format.

And another of the greats passes :-( He always was very popular here in the Netherlands, perhaps the most popular SF writer. His 'Demon Princes' books were probably my first serious SF.
RIP. |

I was writing out a note in a card to go along w/ the gift of a fountain pen for our departing intern, a graduating high school student when I caught this. The note seemed adaptable:
``Life is a message written in ink. Write carefully, write beautifully, & write w/ character.'' Congratulations to Jack Vance on a life written w/ care, using beautiful words and w/ a character which shines as an example of what men should aspire to be. I'd've been a better person if I'd found his books earlier in my life when I was younger and some of the life lessons in them might've had me writing my life more carefully. William |
