What is the background of the announced change of the applicable copyright of the Mobileread Library from 50+ to 70+? Thanks!

Always something isn't there. At least there is a good base of books that are 70+ years through Gutenberg.

Apart from the notice, it still says everywhere on the forum that uploads must be in accordance with Canadian copyright law while the new rule expands it. When will those remarks be updated? The current situation feels a bit kafkaesque.

And what about those special rules for posthumous publications, joint authorship or the rule of the shorter term? Are they still applied according to Canadian law?

No. It will be strictly life+70. The only exceptions will be books that released under a Creative Commons licence, or with some other permission of the author.

I’m not thinking about exceptions that would shorten the term, but the opposite case:

Let’s say that a new Shakespeare play is discovered and published today. Your “strictly life+70” rule would make it ok to upload it here instantly, while Canadian copyright law requires to wait for 50 years. I assume you don’t want us to ignore those laws.

As for joint authorship, it should be understood that when we say "the author" we mean all authors, illustrators, commentators, translators, etc. who could affect the copyright.
