Complete Newb Hopelessness
I just downloaded and installed Calibre on Windows 7 x64. I added one .mobi book to the library successfully but nothing else seems to work. I tried converting it and putting it on my device and Calibre crashes. I can't even open the book in Calibre. When I try to view it nothing happens. I can't even read the Calibre Quick Start Guide because nothing happens when I try to open it. Is Calibre incompatible with my version of Windows?

Some seems to have troubles with the 64 bit version, for others it works fine. Try the 32 bit version?

I'll give that a try. Thanks. I'm happy to use a 32 bit version if it means no problems!

I reinstalled and it seems I'm having better luck this time around. What I want to do is to import the contents of my Nook into Calibre. Is there a way to do that?

There should be an icon on your toolbar when your device is connected, which if I'm remembering correctly is called 'Device'. Click on that, and it should show you the items on your device.
There should also be a flag on the items in your library for those items that are on your device. At the bottom of your library list there is a scroll bar. Scroll it to see if you can see it. If the field is not there, you can always add it (again if I'm remembering correctly) through the preferences tool bar. I'm not in front of my 'Calibre computer' right now so can't verify. If I'm wrong, someone can correct me, or I'll correct when I get home. |

When I look at the Device through Calibre it does show what's on the device, but only for items that I've added with Calibre. It doesn't show all the items that are already on there that were added mostly with Adobe Digital Editions.

What type of device do you have?
I'm using a Sony T1. When it's plugged into Calibre I see 3 new icons, Library, Device and Card A. The Library icon shows all the books in my library, and in the "On Device" Column, shows whether the book is on my reader or not. You can sort by On Device, by clicking the column heading. The Device icon shows which books are on my reader's main memory, and the Card A icon shows which are on my memory card. Depending on which view you look at will depend on whether you see the book or no on the reader. With the device and card views, if you then right click on the book, you can then add it to your library. |

I am using a Nook Simple Touch. When I plug it in Calibre I get some new icons in the toolbar, but they are not exactly the same as yours. I get Library, Send to device, and Device. However, when I view Device it only shows items that I specifically added to the Nook via Calibre. The items that are already on the device do not appear and I don't know if there is a way to do so. It seems like my only option with Calibre would be to retransfer all the times that are already on the Nook, which is something I really don't want to have to do.

You got me then. Maybe someone with a Nook can pipe in. You should be able to see and transfer all your books from your device to the library.

Thanks for trying! I did some web searching on this issue and I couldn't find anything so perhaps it's just some configuration issue on my end, though I would think that if it sees the device it would be able to see the .epub files on it

Thanks for the tips. The strange part is that I was able to import the items from the Nook to Calibre even though they don't show up on the Devices tab. I did this just by choosing the Nook as my import source. I like Calibre but I'm thinking that I might just be better off sticking with Adobe Digital Editions if it comes down to having to manually transfer each item back to the Nook, making duplicate copies on the device. I'll start a topic in the suggested forum.

I've found out over the years that I've been using my e-reader that I just use Calibre exclusively. I don't even use the software that it came with to transfer books. I import everything into Calibre and manage that way. I find Calibre much more versatile than any supplied software. I don't even bother installing the Sony software any more. You might find this too, but yes check the Nook forums to see how people have got around this. I'm sure that there are a couple of solutions. There are a lot of resourceful people here.

How about this one: is there a way to maintain the column format on the Device tab? Every time I connect the Nook I have to resize them so I can read them.
