Kindle Ereader starts to lag after long usage
Why does my Kindle Ereader, Oasis and Paperwhite, starts to lag after more than 20 hours of cumulative reading time? The longer I read, the slower it gets. Highlighting, annotating, and worst of all, finding a dictionary definition of a word starts to get very slow to response. It takes 3 or 4 seconds for the Kindle to response while normally it takes less than half a second.
I can reboot the Kindle and that fixes the problem but I have to reboot all over again after another cycle of 20 hours cumulative reading time. I only have 3 or 4 books downloaded to my device so I don't think indexing is the problem. What causes it and is there anything I can do about it? Because you are running it for 20 hours straight.

Since the battery life is 30 hours max, it sounds like it needs charged. Are you making sure it is sleeping between reads? Oh and when I was younger I could run on 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. |

Do you annotate a lot? Perhaps your My Clippings file is getting too large. Also check to see if it is stuck trying to index some corrupt file (from home screen search for '.' and see if there are items it is trying to index).

This makes a lot of sense. Totally different reader, but this happened to my husband with his Sony 650--he had a lot of bookmarks/notes on his reader. It became really slow--I had a 650 as well at the time and mine had easily four times as many books on it than his, but I don't bookmark or make annotations. My reader operated significantly faster than his.

As rebooting fixes the performance issues I assume that the reader app has a memory leak (or cache without expiration). It could also be caused by your data/books. When allocation new memory to execute simple tasks takes so long for the readet app this is usually the case.
Rebooting / Restarting the reader helps ... assigning much more memory to the process could hide the problem - anyhow Amazon would need to do this and your reader would need enough physical memory. |

I have over 100 books on my voyage, and about 40 magazines. I read at least 4 hours every day. I am only recharging my voyage about every 21 days. Now I do not do any notes, and I do very few work lookups. And I keep my light at the very low level of 10 all the time. Also I do not connect to the Internet but once a week. I have never had issues with slow downs. The only issues I have at times is books that I side load using Calibre do not get removed from the catalog in my voyage, when this happens the only way I know of cleaning it up is to rest my voyage and reload it.
If someone knows how to flush the catalog of items on the voyage I sure would like to know how. |

To the OP, I have this progressive slowing issue with my Oasis. It's annoying. I annotate and look-up words quite frequently. Periodically I delete the My Clippings file. I also go into the Vocabulary Builder and clear words. I don't keep a lot of books on my Kindle. I only queue up a handful of the ones I plan to read in the near future and keep most in the cloud.

I have no such problem with either my Voyage or my Oasis, and I have about 800-900 books on both of them. But then, I never highlight, annotate, use Word Wise or the Vocabulary Builder, have any bookmarks etc. I only use the dictionary sometimes. So it seems that the lag is indeed caused by too many bookmarks or annotations.

I haven't experienced any lag on my Voyage or Oasis, either.
@Bookworm_Girl: Do you find clearing Vocabulary Builder and deleting the "My Clippings" file resolves the problem? I make occasional highlights and notes — maybe 5-20 per book — and that doesn't seem to be a problem. I also bookmark regularly and occasionally use the dictionary. However, I have Vocabulary Builder and Word Wise turned off. Makes me wonder if Vocabulary Builder and/or Word Wise are the culprits??? |

I think the dictionary lookup process is broken in some way. After some time I also experience the same slow response time, similarly solved by a reboot. I only use the dictionary, no annotations, notes, no Wordwise or Vocabulary builder. I had a PW2 before my PW3, and at about a year ago both worked fine. I only experienced this issue after one of the firmware updates.

I've never experienced the slowdown that you describe. My Voyage is very full (about 1900 books on it) and I make extensive use of the dictionary.
Have you checked to see if any items have become stuck while indexing? |
