A really dumb question, but I am curious.
Okay, sorry in advanced for this really dumb question, lol, but I'm definitely curious.

Is Calibre's ebook viewer meant to be a choice for a 'default' viewer, or just used to check quality and such? Because I remember using it a number of years ago for that purpose, viewing ebooks, and really, I thought it was terrific. It's like reading a Kindle or something on my PC. (Which I'm guessing was the intention with the paper-ish layout.)

However, do others use this as their default viewer, since it can view virtually any form of ebook type? It's so ridiculously handy with the library function in all so I'd definitely love to use it for that purpose once more. If only I could create folders within the actual program to sort by different purposes!


Also, does Calibre have a max capacity before it will start acting sluggish? Like any idea what the max amount of books it could hold would be?

Wait.. Nevermind. For some reason if I use the Calibre Viewer to view epub files, the old cover remains there. (I had downloaded a cover and replaced a cover for one of my books, I can see the new cover in the side panel and everything. But when I open it with the viewer, it has the generic Calibre cover instead..)

Use the Modify ePub plugin to replace the cover with the cover of your choice. it's the best way to do this.

To expand on what Jon said...

When you edit the metadata in calibre, you are not changing the actual book. You are modifying the library. Calibre only updates the book when you send it outside of calibre. Saving to disk or sending to an ereader will do this. To update the book in place, use either the "Modify ePub" plugin or the "Polish Books" function of calibre.

As to the viewer, I like it and use it when reading an epub on my laptop.

And I'm also liking the viewer as well, but I have 22k books. Will they all fit into the Calibre library without issues?

While 22K is a lot of books, there are reports here of people with more. The only issue might be slower performance when opening calibre or doing a search.

The viewer in calibre is just a epub viewer. It is possible to view other formats because the are converted "on the fly" to epub and then displayed. To make calibre faster you could make these conversions in advance. That way the ePub version of the book can be displayed at once, without any delay. Or use another reader for other formats.

I only use the calibre reader to check books quickly, not to read. To read I use my Xoom and Mantano.

Almost all actions in calibre are on the database, not on the books in the library. So calibre is very fast, even with a lot of books. The whole database can easily be kept in RAM.

One exception to this is custom columns that displays the formats of the books. For that calibre looks at the actual books to see what formats they have, not just the database. So sorting or searching for books with a specific format can be very slow.

Also complex custom columns that depends on other columns may make calibre slow, because the values of the columns have to be evaluated before they can be displayed.
