Page Numbering

All of the books I have display the total number of pages in the book. I understand that a page is equal to 1024 characters, and that I will have the page number change only after several page turns.

However, I just purchased a book from Kobo and the page numbering is by chapter. And the page number changes with each page turn, regardless of how you sent the font size. When you reach the end of the chapter, it automatically jumps to the new chapter with a new page count.

Is this system of page numbering showing up in other books now? It's no big deal, but I have no idea of how far it is till the end of the book now.

Edit: I believe that it's because it is a kepub. Any way of getting the old page numbering system back?

Yes, that's right. Page numbering is different between the side-loaded epubs and kepubs.

I tried enabling "Show page numbers in the margin" on a kepub but to no effect. It does say on the settings page that this applied to some Adobe EPUBs.

if you want epub numbering, just download the Adobe epub found on the Kobo website. You downloaded using your device, correct? Well go to your account on kobo's website, and go to the book you bought. It will have some option for epub (likely Adobe drm epub) as well, download that and load onto your device (using adobe digital editions if it's an adobe epub)....voila! you have the normal page count until end of book.

That function is strictly for sideloaded epubs. It will put the page number on the right hand side of the screen at the line where the page break actually occurs. The on/off option is there because depending on your margin settings it can overlap some of the text.

That's my biggest annoyance with kepubs (books bought and synced directly from Kobo). Ugh. Yuckness.

Correct. As has been suggested: the only way to get "normal" numbering back is to sideload the epub version of the Kobo book.

And one of my biggest positives for Kobo

I certainly hope they don't change it, unless they do it as an option

To get an idea of how much more is in the book, press the percent read when the bottom menu is shown.

Here's how it happened. I purchased the book from the website on my PC and downloaded using ADE. It was the epub version. I added it to Calibre and stripped the DRM, (using a top secret method no one is allowed to mention!). I did not load it on to my Kobo.

However, the next time I connected the Kobo to the PC, the Kobo desktop app added the book to my device. As others have mentioned, you can't control this. I guess what I got this time was the kepub version.

Actually, since the newest firmware update, you can. Connect the device to you PC and open the Kobo desktop app. From its library, you can select books to have sync to your device. Mouse over a book cover and see an icon appear in the top right of the cover: either a grey one that takes the book off the device, or a green or yellow (I think, from memory), to indicate you want to have the book on the device.

You can also select multiple books, I think the options appear in the bottom bar in the Kobo desktop app. Note this will only be visible if you have a connected device.

Thanks--that is useful to know. But I have already side-loaded by Kobo purchases, and deleted them in my library on the web site so they do not sync to the device. Now, if I want to use this new feature, what do I need to do? If I undelete the epubs in my library on the web site to get them to appear in the Kobo desktop app, and then connect the device, won't this sync the kepubs onto the device first (which will wipe out the side loaded epubs I want to keep)? In other words, is it possible to mark a book as not to be synced without syncing it first?

Yes it will. And then you'll have to go through them manually to unsync them. It's a hassle, I went through it. But luckily, it's only a one time hassle.

No, sideloaded books are left alone. They're not treated as a copy of the kepub. You'll just temporarily have two copies of the same book in two different formats on your device.

Not that I see. But syncing shouldn't take too long, unless of course you have a big load of lots of them.

I was afraid I'd have to go through the whole thing again if I'd do a factory reset or got a new device, but, somehow, only 5 kepubs are synced [after a factory reset/on to a new devices]. The latest 5 purchases are synced, the rest is put into "not sync" mode. So, if you do have millions of kepubs, it might be worth doing a factory reset? I don't know.

OK thanks, I might give it a go, but it is a pity we have to sync books first before we can archive them. I always side-load all my Kobo purchased books, because I like to re-format them first.

Have you updated the desktop application? The latest version doesn't automatically put the books on the device. The function that Mrs_Often describes is part of this version. The version I have is 3.2.0.

I already have the Kobo desktop 3.2.0. I have one book showing in the Kobo desktop library. In the website this book is in the "I'm Reading" list. All my other Kobo books are in the Trash list (I've previously deleted them to move them to Trash so they do not get downloaded.

Now in Kobo desktop, the one book I have there has a little purple bookmark. How to I stop it from synchronising to the device (it is not obvious)? If I right click the book I have options to Open, View Details, or Delete from Library. I think the latter will remove it completely.

Edit: if I try to Open the book I get "We are unable to display the selected content". It may be locked or corrupt". I guess something is broken regarding the DRM and my ADE id. Now I am stuck!
