Real syncing across Kindle, PC, and Androir

I currently have a lot of DRM free ebooks that I want to load onto all of my devices and use full syncing. The books started in epub format but I used Calibre to convert them to mobi. None of them were purchased on the Amazon store.

I have the Kindle for PC app on my Windows 8 PC as well as the Kindle Metro app. I also have a full Windows 8 tablet (not RT) and a Kindle Paperwhite on order, plus my Android phone.

I know if you purchase a book off the Amazon store, it will sync and load onto all your devices and remember your last page, etc. But I am having a real hard time figuring out how to do this with non-Amazon books. I can get them to load on my phone if I send them to my @kindle email, but they won't populate over to the PC/Metro apps. I can open a mobi file in the Kindle for PC app but it will not populate over to the other devices.

When I get my Paperwhite I know I can load them with USB, but I don't know if my last page will then sync over to the PC and Android apps.

Is there a way to force this? I've been googling answers to this for hours with no real luck.

Perhaps try using the Send to Kindle software...

I tried. That app just simplifies sending a Personal Document to a *@kindle email address. That gives rise to multiple problems. First, only one of my devices/apps is letting me have an @kindle address. When i go to "Manage Devices" on the Amazon site, it lists all my devices and reading apps. Under the "Send-to-Kindle Email Address" tab, only one device has an address, the rest just have a " - " and I cannot find where to add unique addresses to each device.

Second, the Kindle PC and Metro apps don't seem to support syncing Personal Documents. When I send a mobi file to the @kindle email address (either with Send to Kindle or over actual email) it shows up in my "Personal Documents" folder on the Amazon site, not under Books. Only Books are sent down to the other devices when syncing. And all of my other devices are greyed out when I try the "Deliver to..." option on the Amazon site.

And lastly, I've only been able to get Send to Kindle to work once. Now I'm getting a "network error" failure around 70% each time. Everything else internet related works fine, just the Send to Kindle windows app is messing up. Not that it would matter anyways as it would just show up in Personal Documents, which don't sync to Windows.

Wow, it looks like Amazon changed how things work when sending/syncing Personal Documents to the Kindle Cloud Reader and Kindle for PC/Mac apps. Apparently Personal Documents can no longer be synced to the Kindle Cloud Reader and Kindle for PC/Mac apps. That sucks. I'm pretty sure they could be at one time. I just verified that they cannot be at the present time. Let us hope this is an unintentional glitch and not a policy change by Amazon. Like a lot of others I typically deDRM my purchased books, modify them to be easier on my eyes, then send them to be Personal Documents. If I can no longer do that and no longer sync them across all platforms then I will be really upset with Amazon.

You don't need to (and shouldn't) send an e-mail with a personal document to each device. Just send the document to one device and then it will be in the library (ready to be downloaded) on all compatible devices and apps.

I've had no problems using this with the cloud reader, iphone, iPad, and PW. I don't know whether it works with Kindle for PC, though, or the metro apps. (Although I'd be surprised if it didn't work with the metro apps.) You do have to manually tell it to download the personal document from the cloud (like you do with a book), and you have to make sure you're using the "docs" tab rather than the "books" tab.

I hope this helps...

I think you're right - I have some older docs that still show up in cloud reader, but one from a couple of weeks ago isn't there.

I have a mix of Amazon and non-Amazon books in my Personal Documents folder on the Amazon site. I am still syncing them across my various reading devices without problems. I use either the Send to Kindle app, or Calibre to send my books to the Personal Documents folder.

That said, I do not read on my PCs, only on Kindles, iPhones and iPad, six devices in all. They are all still syncing properly.

I do have Whispersync Device Synchronization turned on, on my Amazon Your Account > Manage Your Kindle page.

The desktop apps have never supported personal documents (you can side load ebooks to the desktop apps, but they won't sync). I don't know about Cloud Reader, never use it. They might add this capability eventually but the mobile apps seem to get a lot more attention (because they are more popular).

Not if one of those other devices is a Windows PC.
