Ladies and Gentlemen,

This coming Wednesday at 4:00am EDT, MobileRead will be offline for approximately one hour. We're going to move our server equipment to a new location in Germany. That's right, good bye New York, you served us well. The new hardware is a somewhat beefed-up version of the current one, ready to serve us for the long-awaiting switch to a new forum software.

In preparation, we lowered the time-to-live values of our DNS entries. This will allow your local ISP to pick up more quickly our new IP addresses.

Alex, would you mind posting the actually IP address that will work in case some of us get stuck waiting for the DNS to populate?

Does that mean that those books which are currently offline will be back after the transfer? Just wondering as I know that it was the server move that necessitated the offline status of many books that had been online.

A quick look on Wikipedia shows Germany also has a life plus 70 years Copyright duration.

If everything goes as expected (...), we shouldnt't have this problem since the current server will continue to run for at least 72 hours and act as a reverse proxy. Requests to the old server will be transparently forwarded to the new server. It may feel a little bit slower due to the extra hub along the network path; but at least, nobody will get stuck while still using the old DNS entries.

But still a good point - we will publish the new IPs for the forum and the wiki on the maintenance page as soon as it is decided.

That's exact. In the US, copyright is more complicated due to the facets in copyright law, such as the several acts extending the terms of copyrights.

I am not so terribly fond of 1and1 & co.

No, it's going to be colocated @ Hetzner. I have been using their services for over a decade with predominantly positive experiences.

Additionally you won't get the the full NSA surveillance and better privacy laws.
