Question Limit to Number of Books?

Hello:

I am having trouble with my Kobo Touch - is it possible that there is a limit to the number of books? I reach 350 and, despite having 1.1GB of memory left, when I copy books to the Kobo, the shelf says there are books on it, but when I go to that shelf, the message says there are no boopks on the shelf!

Can anyone explain the likely problem?

Many thanks in advance.

As far as I know, the Kobo devices are only limited by space for how many books they have. I only tend to keep a few hundred books on mine, but there are people reporting several thousand books with no problems.

So, at the moment, you have 350 books showing in the library list on the device. You have also sent more books, but they don't turn up? Did the "processing" screen display when you disconnected the Touch? And if you connect the Touch to the PC and disconnect without sending any books, does it display again?

What is probably happening is that you have sent a bad book to the device. What the Kobo devices do is to process any new sideloaded books when they are first seen and add details about them to the internal database. This database is used for the library lists. But, if there is a problem with one of the books, the processing is stopped. No more books are added in that session. If the processing is triggered again, the bad book will stop the processing again.

What you need to do is find the book that is causing this. You need to look through the books in the file system of the device that have not been added to the devices library. It can be a bit of trial and error, but I believe the books are processed in alphabetical order on the file path (directory name plus file name). You need to find these books, remove them from the device and then send them again a few at a time until you find the book that caused the problems.

Hello, David:

Thank you for the information - I didn't think the problem was a book that was ill-formatted - simply because it happened with different sets of books! Instead, there had to be something something wrong with the Kobo itself!

I ultimately solved it by doing a reset (did nothing) and then a factory reset - a bit of a pain to get everything set up again, but now everything is working just fine!

I guess that's the equivalent of doing a clean install - sometimes it just takes a BIG hammer!

Thanks again for an absolutely wonderful program - I don't know what I would do without it!!

Kind regards,

Sparky

That big hammer is very handy. We have a large wooden mallet in the office with "Attitude adjuster" on it. Unfortunately, waving it near a PC doesn't seem to help

I'm glad you solved it. It did occur to me later that the database might have been corrupted. That can also explain these symptoms. If you see something like this again, try logging out of the account on the device
first. This will create a new database when the device is restarted. It's a smaller hammer.
