[Request for 3rd party plugin source] RSVP/SPRITZ used before
Hello, I have been using Calibre for a while, and I used to have a Spritz-like plugin for it that I read a few books with up until recently
I reinstallled windows from a clean install on my computer and can't find the plugin I used anymore. In searching here and elsewhere, I have seen posts about this plugin not being capable at all in Calibre, but I had it before reinstalling Windows and can't find it now. I normally keep a list of programs and details backed up, but this one particular plugin is one I can't seem to find anywhere. It would help if I knew its name, but if anyone has used it before, I would appreciate a link. |

Spritz is the trade-name for a specific RSVP app. RSVP, in the title of the post, is an acronym for Rapid Serial Visual Presentation.
Spritz, and similar tools, are reading tools that have been around for over a decade and brought up in the Calibre forum a few times previously, with a definite "No," in 2021 from Calibre development. These two are the two I can find on a quick search that shows a bit of the difficulty in getting this working again. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=342645 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...18#post2961018 (#639/640) That is why I'm hopeful to find this third party plugin to reinstall. Because Spritz, like Bandaid, is only a tradename and under a trademark last I checked, finding "spritz-like" plugins under RSVP is difficult. Search engines also tend to focus on Browser plugins, not my specific Calibre plugin need. If it is already in Calibre under a different name, that would help and explain why I can't find the third-party plugin anywhere else. |

Generally speaking, calibre plugins have been created by people who see a need for them. In this case, one person asked about such a plugin and another person asked for advice on creating one but never returned since the 2 posts in the thread you linked are their only 2 posts.
I looked at RSVP and personally think it is useless and there was no evidence that it helped dyslexic, ADHD, etc. students improve their reading speed and/or comprehension. Much like the other snake oil improve your reading speed tools. Bionic reading, the various dyslexic fonts, Hyper Bold, etc. Given that it would have to work as part of calibre's viewer to be of any use as a calibre plugin, I suspect that you were not looking at a calibre plugin but rather you were using either an external application set as the default for the ebook type you were reading or using calibre's content server to read through a web browser. |

I would have thought the same in terms of external readers, but Calibre is the only one I like, beyond Firefox to read PDFs.
Maybe it was something external that worked directly with Calibre, hence why I believe it was a third-party one and not one listed or advertised on the Calibre plugins page. Word choice and scope, availability aside, it was a right-click or menu option within Calibre's reader itself that made it so useful. There was no need to highlight text, deal with poorly formatted PDFs from texts, route around images the right way, saving locations to continue etc... Calibre's reader already handled that, and this plugin, applet, cooperating app, whatever it may be that I am searching for, had worked without issue within ------- As for the other issues of not meeting claims of X use for dyslexic, comprehension and so on, that's not for me to decide at this time. I see poor research practices both for and against as each tries to research to markets and personal agendas and assumptions rather than within any scientific method from phenomenon toward theory. I have no assumptions of its suitability for those tasks, much like the "new age" pseudo-eastern "healing" companies I've consulted with in the past, reviewing their "research" and "findings." I don't believe a coffee colonic will cure foot fungus and ingrown hairs, but if a customer asks for one I will make sure it's the best damned coffee we can find. Similarly, I hope to find the most useful RSVP reader for my purpose that I can. I, personally, find RSVP useful for academic texts and some other volumes because it keeps any internal dialogue moving faster, and I don't have to deal with the (often poor) formatting journals output. Additionally, any emails I jam into it are much easier to deal with when Karen or Tim go on and on about their new dog. It may be that my mind wants a reading speed my eyes can't keep up with, my (what used to be called) photographic memory, or any number of preferential things based on my life that makes it useful to me. Of course the one thing that I have a terrible memory with is names, hence the trouble now. If the plugin, app, applet, script... had a recall number, a hash, a UUID, callsign or handle I'd be good to go and find it again by those details... oh well. For now I'm stuck converting to PDF and using scripts in Firefox. |

RSVP = Répondez s'il vous plaît
I really dislike it when others feel the need to try to take over words and/or abbreviations. And as for your Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, it's as useful as Bionic Reading which in plain English means useless. A good example of snake oil is the dyslexic font. It's been proven in scientific tests that those with dyslexia read better with a sans-serif font and sometimes color (no idea which color) helps as well.
