Question is there a known issue with empty anchor-tags?

I'm investigating a problem with EPUBs you can't highlight/note in (with and without PRS+)
The problem - with my test file - is that double-tap opens the dictionary roughly every other paragraph. Also any paragraph which couldn't open the dictionary, couldn't be highlighted/notated.

Checking witch this particular file I came across empty <a>class="calibre#</a> tags all over the file.
And while this file renders without a problem, it seems to me, that the problems occur between the first opening <a> anchor-tag and the next closing one </a>

Sidenote: with just one empty <a></a> tag in the h1 definition, you can't highlight in this file at all.

So to put it straight:
Is anyone aware of a problem with empty <a></a> tags in EPUBs in general, or at Sony PRS-e-readers in particular?

Thanks
Mark
