Firmware Update Which generation PW do I have?

I assumed that there'd be some way to tell on the firmware update page, but I can't find it. Downloaded the firmware for 5.4.2 and placed it on my Kindle, but the update firmware is grayed out and the update itself disappears so I assume I must have a 1st Gen, but why isn't there a description somewhere? And also, what's the idea of releasing a second generation so quickly? Was the 1st Gen. flawed in some way? I mean, they're still selling the DX.

Where & when did you buy it?

If the serial number starts with B024 or B01B it's the original PW

If it starts with B0D4, 90D4 or B0D5 it's the PW2

Just FYI, there is also a very easy external way to discern between a 1st generation PW, aka PW1, and 2nd generation PW2. Which large logo they have centered on their back:

PW1 has a large recessed/matte "Kindle" logo on its backside.

PW2 has a large flush/glossy "Amazon" logo on its backside.

I listed some other differences e.g. in packaging in my PW2 review.

So quickly? There was a year between them. Amazon have traditionally operated on a yearly release cycles for Kindles.
