iRex Community Development Help

I've been talking to the iRex community developer Karel about the iRex Community Development platform.

iRex is very interested in supporting this, however response from the community has been a bit disappointing. iRex plans to support this new development platform much the same way that Nokia supports the Maemo platform. They provide the website, some code examples, sources, and documentation. It's up to the community to provide the rest.

This thread is a call for support. Please post in this thread if you are willing to contribute to this new effort and at what level.

I'm willing to be a leader/organizer/moderator. I can also help write documentation, organize information, provide a little bit of website work, along with my ongoing porting and coding projects.

What can you do to make the iLiad a better platform?

I can test, write specs, file bug reports... I can't write code at this time, but I'd love to participate otherwise.

I wouldn´t mind to help, but honestly i don´t have the skills required, i´m just a regular windows user, the only way that i could help is maybe as a tester. Or maybe you have an idea of how i can help in other ways. Bear in mind that i don´t have programming skills nor linux knowledge.

I think that once we get things rolling, it will be good to have "non technical users" for testing. Often I take for granted the things I know and don't realize that they're not common knowledge. Someone saying "Hey, this is confusing!" does help when we're trying to make things easy for the average person.

Anyone have any Name suggestions?

Nokia has Maemo, Google has Android. What should the iLiad platform be called? I thought of Odyssey, but future iRex devices may not keep with the Greek naming...

I don't have any programming skills at all, but I'm happy to test things, write documentation, etc. (I'm a history of science student at the moment, but have been a professional writer and copy-editor in the past). I use linux (Mepis 7) on my home machine, so I know a *little* about the way it works, though I'm not much of a command line user unless there's no alternative. And I'm all in favour of community development, and happy to join in with whatever needs doing.

The only problem at the moment is that I don't have an Iliad! I ordered one on the very day the European shortage began, so I won't see mine until the end of the month. In the meantime, I just hang around on this forum, feeling wistful...

I don't know, Odyssey sounds pretty good. It doesn't *just* have Greek connections, and has a nice feel of going out there and exploring new frontiers.

And of course there's the Arthur C Clarke connection. I just had an image of a giant Iliad sticking out of the ground like a black monolith, with lots of ape-men gazing at it in awe

Wouldn't it be nice to call it like one of the Greek mythology muses, because this platform can inspire all (wanna-be) developers, users etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muse
for instance: Kalliope - muse of science, philosopy.

[EDIT]: I'm willing to help/write tutorials/documentation, start new porting projects, finish the ones which are not ready right now.

I have absolutely no experience in linux programming but I've got alot of experience in website programming (you know, php ) and I've scored a 18/20 for my Java lessons at school My thesis used Delphi... Well yeah, I'm very interested in programming for my iLiad but I just need to get started on it. I need some good documentation and example codes would be awesome! Reverse engineering is always something that is alot easier to begin with instead of thoose boring books

Summary: I'm in, I got alot of motivation, I love my iLiad but I need to get some ressources first. Ow yeah did I mention that I have LOTS of ideas?

Ow yeah a name.. how about Cerberus? (you know that three headed dog?). Then we can be called the 'Keepers of Cerberus' hehehehe

Well, if we're talking Greek mythology, how about Procrustes, the guy from the Theseus saga, who had two beds for guests and either stretched the guest to fit the bed or chopped his legs off.. isn't that a lot like programming?

BTW, I'm also willing to help any way I can.

That imagery gets my vote.

Dear all,

I would like to participate in the community.
I just bought iLiad to read many pdf I got. It is a great device but lacks some solid software feature.

Thanks to Adam for many community software port.

I'm an experienced developers on java/.net. I didn't have much experience on linux or device programming.

My thought is that the device should have a more solid ebook file reader, language support and an auto-feed mechanism.

Cheers,
Kenny (hong kong)
