				Suggestions, please

If you are offended by scenes of a sexual nature, please read no further! I'd appreciate any suggestions for novels giving an insight into the lives of prostitutes and/or brothels. I realise that such novels are likely to contain sexual content, but I'm not looking for simple erotica or porn. Two popular eras seem to be Victorian times and the 1960s, but I'd appreciate suggestions from any period of history. |

I don't know if you would also be interested in nonfiction as well. If you would, here is one rather insightful Nobody Can Love You More - Life in Delhi's Red Light District by Mayank Austen Soofi published in 2012 by Penguin, Viking Quote:

I highly recommend the Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber. I really enjoyed this novel -- it's set in the Victorian era. Another great novel is Memoirs of a Geisha. It's not strictly about prostitution, as geishas are different than prostitutes, but I think some of the overarching themes are similar. |

I'm really looking for fiction at the moment, but I'll bear that one in mind. Thanks.

maxbookworm: I've read and thoroughly enjoyed both The Crimson Petal and The White and Memoirs of a Geisha, and they're exactly the sort of thing I had in mind.
