Oprah has been offering free books in pdf format for download. I went to her site, downloaded the last two books and used calibre to convert to epub. I know nothing about pdf conversions and failed to notice that once converted there is extra "stuff" that is added into the actual book once converted. Someone mentioned "cleaning the books up once converted". Can someone explain to me how to "clean the extra stuff" from these files or point to the area in MR that has the instructions on how to do that?

I say don't bother. You'd be better off OCR-ing it with FineReader, proofreading it and redoing the layout. There are many topics on this board why PDF is nasty thing to convert. Use the search function.
