Giving away my Kindle 4
I have used my Kindle 4NT for a year now, and just love it. But I know someone who needs a reader so I ordered myself a K4NTB and am going to give her my silver.
So, here are my questions. What do I do? Do I de-register it from the device or the web site? And once it is de-registered, she has to have an Amazon account to get it to work, right? I had one already, so this was a non issue for me. Thanks for the answers. I know these are probably basic questions, but I've never given away a reader that was actually tied to an account before. You simply de-register the Kindle NT either on the kindle or the web.
It can be registered (Serial No.) by the new owner on her account. |

Thank you! I just like to verify things before I do them. I find that saves me a lot of time and trouble in the long run!

All I would do is a factory reset with WiFi on that will remove everything and deregister the device. I've decided to give my Silver one to hubby. He had the K3 but I took it back.

I finally figured out how to do a factory reset! I must not be too Kindle literate, I had to Google how to do it.
I love my Silver, I just hope my Black has as good of a screen. I think I am going to skip the PW for now, too many issues being reported. I never had a KK, but I keep hearing their screens were amazing! OT: Mom is up in Bristol. She saw a woolie worm yesterday. She said it was dark all over. I hope it is wrong and you guys aren't in for a hard cold winter this year! S |

![]() ![]() The K4B has the best screen I've seen on a Kindle. You're going to love it! It's better than my K3. ![]() |

BTW I believe when you deregister a kindle, whatever books are loaded on it stay on it (assuming you don't wipe the memory with a factory reset). So if you want to "loan" the new recipient some books as well, download them to the device, then deregister.

Kindle books are licensed for your personal use only; unless a book is in the public domain, what you describe would be a breach of copyright law.

If you want her to be able to read the books that are currently on the kindle, then simply deregister it from your account at Amazon. If you don't want her to be able to read the books that are currently on the kindle, then delete them off (using factory reset) and deregister it from your account. Then, she can register it with her own amazon account.
She never has to actually register the kindle with amazon if she doesn't want to. So long as it has the software, she can just drag books from her computer onto the kindle. It's only the initial startup to add the software that requires registration. I loan my Kindle out occasionally. By deregistering it, they can read the books already present on the kindle, but can't access my amazon account, not even for archives. Last edited by Tarana; 10-21-2012 at 05:11 PM. |
