buy used or lend ebook darwin biography
dear forum,
Sorry for the rookie question. I am looking for the Darwin biography written by Desmond and Moore. It was published in 1991 so it can be found for less than a dollar online. The problem is that it is 900 pages!!! I would happily buy the ebook version but the cost is $18. While I believe it might be fair to pay the digitalization of a book. I think the cost between the hard copy and the ebook is a bit ridiculous. I know that DRM allows lending a book for 14 and was wondering if either someone here has that book or if there is a website or a forum where people lend ebooks to each other. I would be willing to pay for a used copy of the ebook but from what I understand this is not possible yet. If this doesn't belong here please move. |

It is very likely that the ebook had to be done via OCR. That requires time and editing. The book is obviously not popular and out of print. It's not going to be any more popular as an ebook, I would wager. I see no issue with the disparity of price - it is only kindof hurtful to those of us who can't read the book due to vision damage. You, on the other hand, have a choice. You could spend a few bucks on the actual book OR choose to spend the $18 and get the ebook, read it, resell it.
Nonfiction books are the only thing that I will pay over $10 for the ebook - I already know they have a limited market, but they do seem to do a better job checking for errors than they do for fiction, so at least there is some effort going into it. In addition, I NEED the information. You might check in the Amazon forums to find out if there are any lending groups. Your book choice would likely be popular among those who are currently in college/university, so focus on those types of groups. I know there are established 'lending' groups for craft ebooks, so I wouldn't be surprised if there other groups. Last edited by Tarana; 11-05-2012 at 01:58 PM. |
