Light on or off?
So I knew I would love the light. Didn't realize just how much!!!! Unless I'm reading outside, I have my light on all the time. Mostly on the lowest setting (wish it could go even lower for night reading). My reading experience has definitely become more enjoyable. How about you? Do you use the light more frequently than you thought you would?

My experiences with backlit screens (computer/tablet) combined with those using lighted cases and clip on reading lights left me a bit 'meh' and unsure about eInk devices with built in lighting.
But that said, I am much more enjoying using the light feature of my Glo, esp. as I can alter the degree of lighting or switch it totally off. I'm actually using the light feature a lot more frequently than I expected to. It's comfortable, esp. being able to tweak the light depending on where I am using it. I also find that I don't need to personally go past around the 30/35% level even a night in bed. So I'm glad I took the chance after all. I was really pleasantly surprised. I tend to use the glo most times. Adjusted correctly, it makes the screen "white" and you don't notice that it's lit, just white.
I too wish there was a lower brightness setting for late-night reading. Even if I get streaks or headlights out of the deal, dimmer would be better. |

Yes, I use it pretty much 100% of the time, with the exception of sitting by a window in direct sunlight. Haven't had the pleasure of reading outside yet with our fall temperatures ...
Note: I charged it fully when I got it, Oct 3, and other than plugging it in to my computer to sync with ADE for a library book, did not charge it, and didn't run out of battery till yesterday. Read 2 1/2 books, at least 1 hour per day (with the light on) and usually more. I noticed, before running out, at the top of the screen that it said something like "your battery is running low" instead of the book title - I checked and it said 7% though it may have been displaying for longer than that. It lasted some number of minutes. |

I definitely don't use the light as much as others here. I love it at night or in dim light or in lighting where I'm getting a tad bit of a reflection.
But maybe it's because this is my first ereader, but I'm so happy to read on something that doesn't resemble a computer (or anything LCD) that I also LOVE to read it with the light off, I find the print looks more like a book with the light off than even at the lowest setting on. When on, I mostly do leave it at the lowest setting, especially at night, and would be happy with a lower setting as others have mentioned. All in all, I'm really happy with my glo, and not having to try to use a reading light in less than ideal conditions definitely makes the glo worth it! |

I have definitely surprised myself using the Glo function in dim light environments, with the result of a much better comfort, and as it has already been stated, a whiter rendering of the page.
I, too, would very much welcome an even lower brightness level for night reading, but it already is much better than a third party one (clip light or bed light) anyway. As a matter of fact I have never used anything yet but the very lowest one. |

I find myself with the light on pretty much all the time at minimum setting, that means that it makes it invisible in normal light but still easy to read in any other light, haven't gone for the getting it to look white option yet, though I may think about that!

I generally agree with Uschiekid - i prefer the greyer background when unlit and only turn on the light when in a dimmer (or other less than ideal lighting) environment. Same reason I prefer to read sepia or white on black on my iphone and not a white background.
I sit in front of a computer all day for work and definitely find the greyer background easier on my eyes.... |

I use the light at the lowest setting in the dark, and like many posters here, still find it a bit bright. I use the second lowest light setting during the day, always on. I don't know if I'm imagining things, but the light appears whiter after it has been turned on for a while. When I first start reading, it seems more blue. I haven't charged mine yet other than when transferring books via USB and have read for about 54 hours total with 66% battery remaining.

As a lot of people here, I read with the light on at night or in dim conditions, the rest of the time with light off. It makes reading feel very comfortable though as other, I could do with a dimmer light too at lowest setting. I charged it fully the day I bought it (waiting to get home to play with it, I charged it at my office, making me feeling a bit less frustrated not to "play" with it immediately

I thought I'd only use it in bed, but I don't think I've used it once without the light on. During the day, just on the lowest setting, or close to it, to make the screen look whiter. Don't think I've ever turned the light up more than half way under any circumstances. Well, other than testing.

Does anyone have any feel for how much quicker the battery drains when the light is on all the time? E.g., with the light permanently on at minimum, it drains X % more quickly.

I don't have any numbers, but I'm starting to think that Kobo may actually have been telling the whole truth when they said the light does not significantly affect the battery life.

It's most likely just your eyes adjusting to the color of the LEDs. LEDs tend towards a bluish or greenish output and generally do not shift in color unless damaged from being overdriven or when near end of life (around 50,000 hours).

I've been turning my light on at every available chance. Even now I'm using it when it is not quite dark enough to turn on the light in the room but having it on makes it much more comfortable to read. I also find the lowest setting to be more than adequate even in a pitch black room. Its funny because in many situations when the lighting wasn't optimal I used to feel awkward pulling out a clip on light or using the light arttached to my case but turning the glo light on just feels so natural to me now.
