Where to go now?
Last week I had to travel a lot, going from plane to plane and from airport to airport. I took my K3 for granted as it had been with me for 2 years and seemed invincible, but at some point it must have been under a lot of physical pressure in my backpack.
The result is that a relatively big part of the upper left screen is not working anymore, it looks white-r and I believe that there is no going back. So my question is what to do now. I don't believe it can be repaired. What do you suggest I do? I liked my K3 with its keyboard and the fact that I can turn the pages with the side buttons. The Paperwhites look nice with them bright screens, but no side-buttons? Can you get used to the touchscreen? Also, I liked to listen to music and no audio in PW is a problem (not huge, but not small either). If then a Paperwhite is not good for me, what should I do? Go to the K4s without the physical keyboard? Try the Touch? What are my options? Please also have in mind that I live in Europe (so no international shipping for the PW yet) and that I used the Duokan a lot (for epubs etc). Any advice would be appreciated, while I mourn my beloved K3 ![]() |

Why not just buy another keyboard, since you like it so much? They are still offered.

I only see the 3G model (which is a bit expensive) on the Amazon site. Am I wrong?

You're not wrong, it looks as though the 3G model is the only one offered any more. Still, it's a lot cheaper than the 3G KKs used to be, right?
![]() If listening to audio files through your Kindle is a really big factor, then the KK is really the only option you can go with, unless you go for one of the Fires. Neither the Kindle 4 nor the Kindle Paperwhite have audio support. Since you're not fond of touch, and you mentioned the KK being quite expensive (where it's only $20 more expensive than the Paperwhite), I would say that if you don't want to grab another KK, you should grab a Kindle 4. Having Bender on your bent Kindle is very appropriate.

GlassX - 2 weeks ago I noticed a crack just below the screen on my dearly beloved Kindle Keyboard. I contacted Amzon's Kindle Customer Service to see what can be done. They were nice enought to offer me a US$ 50.- discount for a replacement Kindle Keyboard 3G. Needless to say I was over the moon about it. Like you, I don't live in the US.
All the other Kindles just don't really appeal to me. My replacement Kindle arrived 4 days after my conversation with Kindle CS - I was very impressed by them. |

Thanks guys for the answers.
@Moriarty audio is not that crucial, I liked it but I used it only when I was outside. I can live without it. I surely don't need the 3G (I even could live without the wifi which I used rarely). The K3 3G is almost double the price of the K4, so I find it expensive. Especially when I could get the newest one PW with the same amount of money more or less. But as I said I don't expect from my e-reader many things. I just use it to read. Do you think that a K4 could do the work? (The black ones are newer?) @AZI. You can kiss Bender's shiny new Paperwhite :P @manou. I did call them, but they offered me a very small discount for the K4 which was not really worth it if I included the shipping costs for sending my broken one. |

They offered that to me first, when I told them that I would rather like to get the same device like the one with the crack they checked and made me the offer I mentioned above. I opted for the cheapest shipment option and they were nice enough to send it by UPS, so I've got fairly quickly.
Maybe you could try again.... I used to haggle and negotiate with factories in China - thus I can be very charming while being persistent ![]() |

With any decision like this one must consider at least two things: the replacement vs repair difference and the opportunity costs. The first is sort of obvious, what is the cost of repair of the old one vs the cost of the new one? Is the replacement cheaper then the repair costs of the old one, sometimes you can not get the old one repaired so this is a moot point. The second issue is the opportunity costs and this one is rather subjective: How much dollars is it worth to you to have a kindle which has no problems what so ever? Tackle these two issues and you have your definitive answer and this goes for most things that need to be repaired or replaced.

Repair is out of question I think.
My biggest problem is what model to choose. I really liked my K3. However I only see 3G models, that are expensive available in the official site. Apart from ebay, do you know other US based places where I can get a K3 wifi? I have a friend of mine at the States and he could get it for me. About the other models. K4: + Cheap - No audio Touch: + Audio - I'm not sure I'd like the touch page flipping instead of the physical buttons. Also I don't know where to find it. PW: + Best screen - Wondering if the battery will be indeed good. No audio. Last edited by GlassX; 09-21-2012 at 08:11 AM. |

If you like the k3 but don't want 3g, what about buying used? I've been using a secondhand k2 for a few years and it's been fine.

My vote would be for another K3/KK if you don't repair you current reader. You might also consider one of these from Pelican.
