Do you like sex/love scenes in the stories you read?
I ask about sex/love scenes in fiction because some people really like them, some people don't mind them, and others definitely want their fiction to go through a prude filter. Plus it's interesting to discuss.

The poll should really allow for multiple answers. In my case I would choose:
"I really enjoy sexuality in fiction." and "Love scenes are fine if they contribute to characterization and plot." I don't see how they are mutually exclusive. I like to read a good story; if there's sex in the mix, yay, if not, yay, as long as the story is enjoyable. |

Depends... does it add to or is it essential to the story or is it just a gratuitous add-on without actual relevance... and it doesn't require clinical descriptions, get a medical book for that if unfamiliar...

None for me, please. I either read fiction or hard core erotica. No in-betweens for me. Some things in fiction should be left for the imagination of the reader. As we all have our very own ideas of what is erotic, what may be your turn-on might be my downer.

I don't like the way the OP refers to a "prude filter"--that's a pejorative and annoying characterization.
Mystery and suspense is my favorite genre. In mysteries, generally I feel that explicit love scenes are nothing but boring filler that interrupt the plot. |

I certainly don't mind sex scenes as such, quite the opposite but only if they are well done. The difficult part for the writer is knowing what I'd consider a good scene and enjoy to read
![]() Is there a lower tolerance for a badly written sex scene compared to most other types of scenes? For me, I think so. Bad sex isn't fun. |

If it doesn't contribute to the plot then I view it as written porn. But since I'm not exactly against visual porn it doesn't bother me if others get their jollies from purient (not contributing to plot) writing.

I would answer "it depends on the book". A book like "Pride and Prejudice" without love scenes (love scenes - not graphic sex) would be meaningless. Love scenes in a hard SF novel are probably irrelevant.
