I imagine there will be performance tweaks coming very soon. Last year's Fire had similar issues when it first shipped. Should be able to install something like Go Launcher if you don't like Amazon's UI.

There is an extensive review at The Wall Street Journal. They are not terribly impressed.

All these reviews go on about how much better the iPad is which isn't fair! There is NO balance and it's just blatant Apple fanboyism. I love Apple, I have gone through many iPods, iPhones, and own several Macs, but I love the original Kindle Fire and am buying the new one because I don't like the iPad at this point still.
So as someone who's still a Mac user, but still likes these KFs, I'd wish the reviews were more about the device itself and not comparisons. |

So you cannot access Favorites from the home screen? Instead, you get the carousel and ads. Not sure that replacing Favorites with ads improves the interface. I suppose I'll have to watch a video review to really get a better understanding of the UI changes but my 1st impression is not positive just based on the omnipresence of ads and making it even more challenging to find what you want quickly via the stock UI.

The little star may be a bonus. Not sure without having actually handled one. Makes me want to really avoid the homescreen though. But I suppose GoLauncher would take care of this problem. What I don't like is that my current 1st gen Fire often freezes when I launch the Kindle reader from GoLauncher. So that made me go back to stock UI, in which the quick access to Favorites from the home screen is a nice feature. Hence my whining about no favorites on the Fire HD home screen.

I agree. This review said it best, "The most impressive thing about Kindle Fire is something I liked in its first iteration, too: It is not an iPad clone. Amazon has developed a good user interface and deserves credit for it." http://gigaom.com/mobile/my-thoughts...-2012-edition/ |

The thing that troubles me the most about the new Fire is the "Customers Also Bought" under everything in the carousel. I get that this is a platform to buy stuff from Amazon, but I don't want to see that on virtually every screen.

Here's the new favorites tab. It's nice. You probably won't have to see the carousel much actually.

Edit: I suspect that soon after I receive mine and then test drive it a while. And also give the gurus time to look at its firmware. I will look on the forum and elsewhere for the best way and what flavor to use and root mine. So I will not be "Limited" to amazon only goodies and apps. A review of the Kindle Fire HD is not for the Amazon fans... they're already sold on the benefits of the Amazon ecosystem. It is for those who are undecided. And in their indecision, they'll be weighing the KFHD against what they have already heard of (primarily the iPad). Depending upon a person's needs/wants, the iPad IS a better tablet. But for others, it isn't. That can happen with a fair review without the need to claim fanboy journalism. Frankly, there has been more Google fanboyism on exhibit over the last month or so over the Nexus 7... now THAT's a tablet that has not warranted the excitement generated. If it were sold with the Coby or Pandigital branding, it would've been received with yawns. Having said all that, I believe that the KFHD compares quite favorably with the iPad. I love the hardware. There's a high quality to it. I own two 7" Android tablets, an original KF, and an iPad 2, and I still have to exercise some self-control against buying one of the HD models. They're THAT compelling! I was just noseing around the amazon kindle board and in at least one question answered by one of the "experts" about Sept 14 dates, and I swear that they said some have already shipped today, and some delivery's will be on the 14th. Found it near the end of the new posts.
Who are these experts, are they amazon employes? I sure do not want to start anything. Found it by using the show newest posts first and reading them backwards in order Edit: My bad, they are talking about an August 14th date?? Last edited by DustyDisks; 09-12-2012 at 10:28 PM. |
