				50 Shades banned from libraries

in Sweden and for eBooks that is. EL James agent made that a condition for the Swedish publisher (Norstedt, one of the big publishing houses in Sweden) to get the rights for the Swedish edition. You can read about it here but you probably need Google Translate unless you know Swedish. |

They do, just not the eBook version of it. National depositiories (I think we have three) get copies, but they don't lend to the public. You are however free to read on the premises.

Sorry, I'd overlooked that you were talking about eBooks (although you do say so quite explicitly in your post). My fault!

At fist I assumed that Swedish libraries were banning it, but it looks like tha author is forbidding Swedish libraried from stocking the e-book?

It is probably good for the libraries since if they have not changed the system the libraries have to pay a lot of money per loan. And for a popular book it really hurt them.

The agent, though, is the author's representative. Presumably they were acting with her knowledge?

The article doesn't say. I assume she wants to focus on writing and lets the agent handle the business side. I am more curious about if the same thing is being done in other countries, or if this is peculiar to Sweden.

So it has not in fact been banned. The agent just negotiated p-book only.

The impression I got after reading the article was that no translated e-books from Norstedts were available through the library. Norstedts simply think is too much hassle to the library rights in the contracts.

I got the impression that the libraries fear that something like that might materialize. Not that it was already in effect.

This will delay the dissemination of eReaders even more, sucks big time.
